Give yourself over to the old days of steam and jump on a SVR train. The journey snakes through lush West Midlands countryside taking in a series of pretty little stops. Try Bridgnorth station, close to a once thriving port and now a bustling little spot with lively Saturday street market and smart little cafes. Then move onto Hampton Loade, an ideal location to get out the picnic hamper or ride across the river on the current-powered passenger foot ferry. You’ll also find the lovely 17th century National Trust property Dudmaston Hall and gardens there. And don’t forget your hiking boots – another stop, Highley Station, is a great gateway to the breath taking walks and pathways of the Severn Valley Country Park. The Engine House stop is home to the network’s reserve collection of steam locomotives (and a rather nice café with stunning views across the valley) while Arley station is handy for the gorgeous arboretum nearby.
