For nostalgia fans, railway buffs and, well, anyone who loves whistling through the beautiful Cotswolds countryside, a trip on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway makes a grand day out. The 24-mile round trip from Cheltenham Racecourse to Laverton via Gotherington, Winchcombe and Toddington incorporates the 693-yard Great Tunnel - one of the longest on a preserved railway and with just gorgeous views across the Malvern Hills and the Vale of Evesham. A range of heritage diesel locos operate the route. North of Toddington, you travel high up over the 15-arch Stanway Viaduct (crane your neck to spot the lovely Stanway House) or if you head south you’ll pass through the workshop where all the diesels are maintained. Stop off at the 1950s-themed coffee shop at Winchcombe for a home-made cake or ice-cream eaten at bright and breezy red check table clothes.
