The Avon Valley Railway offers steam-hauled trips through the River Avon valley close to Bristol and Bath. Oh, but this is more than just a train ride through the south west. This is nostalgia writ large, so expect to find a once neglected Midland Railway station (at Bitten) now beautifully restored to its former glory. You’ll buy your tickets in the booking office which is filled with artefacts, posters and notices reminiscent of the railway’s heyday and then you can sit and wait for your vintage loco in the pleasant garden or poke about in the shop for souvenirs and memorabilia. There’s even a restaurant to enjoy lunch in and make a day of your visit. And, of course, you are in the heart of some of the loveliest countryside in Britain so the views from your train window are delightful.
