Everyone has heard of Hampton Court Palace, where the mighty King Henry VIII entertained, wooed and ruled with a rod of iron. The Great Hall is England’s greatest example of a medieval hall and was host to Shakespeare’s company in 1603/4 while the stunning Chapel Royal, which has been used continuously for 450 years, is a masterpiece in religious architecture of the time. But beyond the truly fabulous, historic nature of the buildings, there are also masses of activities designed to bring the Tudor world to life. The Young Henry VIII exhibition brings fat old Henry in his youthful days to the fore while the recreation of the king’s Crown of State is a dazzling object richly summing up Henry’s opulent life. Puzzle through the famous maze, take part in Tudor celebrations, follow a costumed guided tour or see life behind the scenes in the giant court kitchens. A wonderful, educational fun day out.
