No 1 Bank End, London, SE1 9BU
Whether your knowledge of wine stretches only as far as what it says on the back of a bottle of Pinot or would put Jane McQuitty to shame, Vinopolis makes for a very pleasing afternoon’s London attraction. All high-vaulted ceilings and exposed brick-work, this place is all about educational and tasting zones and is set in the heart of Bankside (just near the Tate Modern and Borough Market) beneath a set of grand Victorian railways arches. Explore the flavours of a whole range of little numbers and use the interactive technology to help you work out your preferred tipple. There’s also the opportunity to chat with the experts that shouldn’t be missed – after all, think of the showing-off potential at your next dinner party.
Vinopolis is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"There are thousands of bottles of wines nestling in this atmospheric high-vaulted ceilinged space beneath Victorian arches close to Borough Market in the heart of London and it is your task to decide which you like. It’s a tough life. There’s also a champagne bar, tapas bar, geography zone where you learn about the difference between wines from different countries and a discovery zone where you can taste Nyetimber sparkling English wine. There are five restaurants and bars in all, two shops to pick up whatever you became partial to on your tour and private space for hire."
"Not all vineyards are in the countryside. City dwellers can find the UK’s best known ‘urban vineyard’ located in the Victorian railway arches beneath London Bridge. The stunning venue alone has over 100 wines to sample, plus five bars and restaurants. A wine tasting tour could be the perfect present, offering your dad a leisurely, and possibly quite squiffy, afternoon on the Southbank."
"Stuff drowning your sorrows, the wine at Vinopolis is far too good for that - this wine deserves to be celebrated. So get a gaggle of your favourite girls together and get down there. Whether you know your Muscadet from your Meursault, or your Sancerre from your St Emilion, with over 100 wines to choose from its perfect for a spot of vinotherapy."
"For a move away from the rural wine tasting experience, this is one of the UK’s best known “urban Vineyards”, ideal for those who can’t escape the city but want to explore the world of wine. London’s Vinopolis offers in-depth tours and wine masterclasses, which are being revamped in June ready for Autumn – perfect for parties, groups, friends and colleagues."
