It was only meant to be temporary, the London Eye. A 135-metre high confection of steel and glass, inexorably turning at a snail’s pace so that 3.5 million tourists and Londoners can hop on and see across the capital and beyond. But 14 years on and no one would even consider pulling down this wonderful attraction that has been voted more popular than the Eiffel Tower by TripAdvisor users. How else is it possible to get such a panoramic view of all of the city’s fabulous landmarks, from the elegant distinctive dome of St Paul’s to the soaring brutalism of the BT Tower? On a clear day you can see two of the Queen’s hang outs – Buckingham Palace just across the river and, 25 miles further, the stately Windsor Castle. For a real treat, you can also hire out a capsule for you and a partner complete with champers and truffles, host a dinner up there or even tie the knot in the sky.
