Overview

Built about 1130, The Manor Hemingford Grey is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain. It was made famous as ‘Green Knowe' by author Lucy Boston. Her patchwork collection is on show. The garden has topiary, old roses, award winning irises and herbaceous borders.

Where is The Manor located?

The Manor is situated by the river in Hemingford Grey. By car: 4 miles south-east of Huntingdon just off the A14. By train: to Huntingdon railway station, and then by taxi. By bus / guided bus: from Cambridge or Huntingdon to St Ives Bus Station, then complete the journey to Hemingford Grey by taxi or on foot (apx 1 hour).

What style of garden is The Manor?

A 3 acre cottage style garden in a formal setting of topiary and lawns, with scented herbaceous borders. The garden was designed and planted by Lucy Boston and surrounds the 12th century manor house. Graham Stuart Thomas advised on planting of roses and irises and searched out rarities or both, some of which still grow in the garden. .

What can guests enjoy at The Manor?

Visitors enjoy seeing plants that they know from their childhood. Many scenes written about in Lucy Boston's Green Knowe books were based in the garden at The Manor. There are plenty of seats in the garden for people to be able to relax and absorb the peaceful atmosphere in surroundings that time has by-passed.
