South Shields Museum is housed in a listed building which used to be the Library. It specialises in local history and has an art gallery and small animal collection. There are both permanent and regularly-changing exhibitions.

South Shields Museum is situated on the pedestrian section of Ocean Road and is a 1-minute walk from both the Metro Station and bus station. There is free parking just off the road section of Ocean Road, in Flagg Court. It is 10 minutes' walk from the Tyne pedestrian ferry and about 10 minutes' walk from the beach.

South Shields Museum building has been at the heart of South Shields for over 150 years. It was originally a workers' institute and a library. It had a major makeover with Heritage Lottery Fund help in the early 2000s.

What is there to see and do at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery?

There are four areas where exhibitions change regularly and the large permanent South Tyneside gallery. Craft activities are held for children during the holidays and the small animal display is always popular. There is a Victorian-style tearoom and there are two room for hire. The interior of the Museum houses a magnificent staircase with an impressive stained glass window backdrop.
