Overview

This 3.5 acre walled garden dates back to around 1700 but was probably extended around in the 1760s. It's huge walls, one heated on the north side, are in good condition. The walled garden has a dividing wall down the middle that separates the vast kitchen garden with a smaller ornamental pleasure garden. The kitchen garden is unusual for containing an internal walled area designed to maximise the south facing aspect, and used to contain exotic (for the time) fruit such as pineapples. Today, Catherine and Steve and a team of volunteers lovingly look after the Walled Garden and run the Nursery. They are enhancing the herbaceous borders and flower beds. Current projects include establishing a wildflower meadow stocked with native British species, two new Mediterranean beds, and restoring the Kitchen Garden.

Where is Langham Hall Walled Garden & Nursery located?

The Walled Garden is located within the grounds of Langham Hall, a privately owned Georgian house, and next to Langham Grange, which are some old farm buildings now converted to offices. It is 8 miles northeast of Bury St Edmunds, or 25 miles north west of Ipswich.

What style of garden is Langham Hall Walled Garden & Nursery?

This large walled garden contains both ornamental and kitchen gardens. The ornamental side has deep herbaceous borders lined with box hedges, gravel paths, two grass tennis courts (not currently in use) and two Mediterranean beds which were started in 2019 and will take some time to mature. The walls have huge Wisteria which looks stunning in May. The Kitchen garden contains a variety of fruit and vegetables including several rare species of apple tree, some very old. It is also where the plant nursery is located. As well as containing popular and traditional annuals and perennials, the plant nursery also aims to supply a range of more unusual native British species. The hope here is that these native varieties will help wildlife, as well as help save these heritage and heirloom plants and vegetables into the future.

What can guests enjoy at Langham Hall Walled Garden & Nursery?

The main thing to enjoy is the beauty of this walled garden, a lovely place to wander and relax, and perhaps seek inspiration for your own garden. You can also speak to the gardeners and hear about what they are doing. If you feel like buying a plant, there is a wide variety available at competitive prices.
