Overview

Johnby Hall is a family-friendly and dog-friendly bed and breakfast on the edge of the Lake District. The Hall is an Elizabethan manor house, built onto a 14th century pele tower. Breakfasts are served in the 16th century Great Hall and include bacon and sausage from the free-range pigs, and eggs from the free-range chickens which live in the grounds.

All guests at Johnby Hall enjoy a warm welcome in this historic family home. Guests can explore the extensive gardens, as well as walks in the adjoining woodlands which are perfect for dogs. Children will find garden toys and playmates, and can help feed the pigs. Guests often oversleep because the beds are so comfortable and the surroundings so peaceful and quiet! All apartments are spacious with private sitting rooms and good WiFi. Two apartments are for bed and breakfast only, but the Garden Barn is available for self-catering, as well as bed and breakfast.

Kelly is a seventeenth-century wing of the house and has a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom, as well as an enclosed dog-proof garden. It has a king-sized bed and a single bed and is available as a double, twin or family room. The Studio is a conversion of an artist's studio in the garden. It has a king-sized bed and a single bed upstairs in the bedroom, as well as a sofa bed downstairs in the sitting room. There is also a shower room and kitchenette. It is available as a double, twin or family room. The Garden Barn has two bedrooms, a sitting room and a shower room, and can sleep a couple or a family of four or five.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Penrith area?

Johnby Hall is on the edge of the Lake District National Park and offers easy access to all that the region has to offer. It is also very close to the Eden Valley, Solway Firth AONB and Hadrian's Wall.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Breakfasts feature Johnby Hall's own free-range sausage, bacon and eggs. Supper is available occasionally by appointment, but the local pub (1 mile away) is excellent and dog-friendly. The Lake District is full of restaurant options, from fine dining to more simple choices.

Directions from the M6: Leave the M6 at Penrith, junction 40. From the roundabout take the A66 westbound towards Keswick. After a couple of miles (and a little beyond the Rheged roundabout) take the right hand exit marked Greystoke. At the next T junction turn left to Greystoke. At the village green in Greystoke turn right to Johnby, taking the left hand fork at the Cycle Cafe. Johnby Hall is on the left with white gates after about a mile, just before the road rises to Johnby Village.
