Overview

Built in 1793 and probably intended as a fishing lodge, Houghton Lodge is the UK's best surviving example of an 18th Century Cottage Orné. Idyllically set above the tranquil waters of the River Test with untouched views across the valley and water meadows with glorious gardens sheltered by beautiful trees and swathes of lawn sweeping down to the River Test.

Where is Houghton Lodge Gardens located?

Houghton Lodge is in the heart of the Test Valley, only an hour and a half from Central London, a simple and usually fast journey straight down the M3 and the A30. Just five minutes from the local town of Stockbridge. Follow the signs to Houghton Lodge Gardens. Winchester and Andover are the nearest mainline stations (to/from London, Waterloo).

What style of garden is Houghton Lodge Gardens?

The gardens at Houghton Lodge are a charming example of an eighteenth century informal garden designed in this ‘Natural Style'. Architects and garden designers set about softening the boundaries between house and garden with delightful contrivances such as conservatories, French windows, terraces and verandas with vases of flowers and plant containers in profusion both inside and out. There is total harmony between the shape of the house, its carefully contoured lawns and the sweeping bends of the river. There are both formal and informal gardens, a traditional kitchen garden enclosed within chalk cob walls, an orchid house, topiary dragon and peacock garden.

What can guests enjoy at Houghton Lodge Gardens?

In early summer the fragrant peonies line the stunning rose arbour path leading to hidden corners of the garden. The Long Border has yearlong beauty, bursting with bulbs in the spring, a tapestry of colour in the summer, and dahlias to brighten your heart in the autumn. Visit the local artists exhibition in the Orangery before enjoying refreshments in tearooms - Honesty at Houghton Lodge Gardens,
