Overview

At Hartleap, an idyllic, 150 year old cottage nestling in the Scottish Border hills, you can enjoy a tranquil, rural retreat with organic cotton linen on the kingsize bed, fabulous views and delicious home-cooked meals. Vegetarian and fish dishes are the speciality of the house, and the hosts aim to make each stay truly memorable.

What makes a stay at Hartleap unique?

Comfort and style are the key elements of a stay at Hartleap. With only one room available to book, with a private sitting room with log fire and a private dining room, guests can be assured of peace and privacy. Feel at home but also enjoy the many personal and individual touches that Hartleap offers, from plentiful breakfasts made to order to the one and a half acre garden, including the organic kitchen garden which provides much of the produce used for meals.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Hartleap?

Hartleap offers a double bedroom with a king-sized bed and an en-suite shower room. The room is intimate and comfortably furnished with antiques and art. Organic toiletries are provided, as well as a welcome tray with tea, coffee, herbal tea and home-made shortbread. Guests have exclusive use of the elegant and stylish sitting room with TV, music and books, plus a log fire when evenings are chilly. A conservatory for enjoying the views is also at guests' disposal. There is free WiFi and jackets, boots and brollies to borrow for venturing outdoors.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Selkirk, Scotland area?

The Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys are a peaceful and unspoilt area of the Scottish Borders. Walking in the hills and cycling the quiet rural roads are very popular pastimes. Many stately homes and historic sites are there to be explored and literary connections with Sir Walter Scott, John Buchan and James Hogg are also to be found locally. A visit to the cashmere factory shops is highly recommended. Suggestions for days out can always be discussed with the hosts who can offer local knowledge of the area.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

While guests are urged not to miss the high standard of cuisine on offer at Hartleap, there may be alternatives to enjoy while out and about exploring the area. Towns such as Innerleithen, Peebles and Selkirk offer several small, independent restaurants.  Local pubs are a short drive away.

Other Information

Due to its very secluded location, there is no public transport within 10 miles, so a car is essential. The route of the Southern Upland Way passes not far from the house and walkers can be collected by car and taken to Hartleap for an overnight stay before continuing their walk.

Visit number 6 to this wonderful place, we arrived 5 hours late due to mechanical difficulties and the most awful weather conditions causing diversions off the motorway twice, when the door opened we were greeted by the most friendly and sympathetic faces of Lyndsay and Kevin who made us sit and relax before serving us with a wonderful meal as if this was all normal. We can’t thank you enough for your kindness and understanding. Gill n Paul

1) The house, including the rooms provided for the use of guests, is delightful and comfortable. The gardens, which we hope to see more of in a subsequent visit, looked amazing. 2) Although my husband is vegan and I am coeliac this presented no obstacle to Lindsay who provided us with delicious and imaginative meals of the highest standard. 3) We received a genuine welcome from our hosts who were both attentive and helpful
