Overview

Golf has been played in Carnoustie for over four decades. The first evidence that the game was played in the town of Angus can be found in the Parish Records of 1560, when the game of gowff was mentioned, and there is every evidence that the game has played an important part in the life of the city ever since.

What sort of course features can the player expect?

Possibly the hardest link course in Britain. The Open Championship was played here on 7 occasions, most recently in 2007. The present golf course was designed by Alan Robertson of St Andrews in 1850. Gorse, broom, open ditches, pot bunkers on almost every fairway, and tough, short greens destroy cards and handicaps. The Barry Burn is an extra threat in the last three holes. It's a storm in the breeze off the back of the tees. The complementary Burnside and Buddon courses that wind around and inside the main course are simpler and easier challenges on the same stretch of desirable sandy terrain. Host of the Senior Open in 2010 and the Ladies Open in 2011.
