Overview

Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre offers contemporary exhibitions of local and international artists, and also offers an insight into the history of Bury. The centre also offers a full calendar of events and activities to suit all interests.

Where is Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre located?

Located in Bury's Culture Quarter, close to the Mill Gate Shopping Centre and Kay Gardens, Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is just 45 metres from the bus and tram interchange. Central and South Manchester are easily accessible.

What is the history of Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre to the present day?

Opening back in 1901, Bury Art Museum was at the time a purpose-built venue, showing the personal art collection of Thomas Wrigley, a local paper manufacturer. This collection has been donated to the people of bury in 187, by Wrigley's children. Highlights of the collection include pieces by Constable, Landseer, Turner and Clausen. The gallery has been commissioning contemporary art since 2000, and it was given its current name in 2014, when a contemporary sculpture space was introduced.

What is there to see and do at Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre?

The gallery blends older works with contemporary pieces, to stimulate and engage its audience. The Victorian gallery spaces house many of the best pieces from the collection, interspersed with pop-up exhibitions and contemporary acquisitions. The gallery and sculpture centre both play host to a range of events throughout the year, and the museum has a great local history display.

Other Information

Bury Art Museum is also home to the Pilkington's Pots Collection and the Text Art Archive. The art museum has an annual show featuring the work of local art and photographic societies. Art and craft sessions for children are held all year round, as well as adult art classes. There are regular tours and talks, for visitors to learn more about the exhibitions and about the permanent collection. There is also a tea room and an art shop.
