Overview

The Borrowdale Gates Hotel is situated in quite possibly the most stunning valley in all of England and all around are the Lakeland mountains that makes this corner of the world unforgettable to all that visit.

What makes a stay at Borrowdale Gates Hotel unique?

Set in 3 acres of its own wooded, dry-stone walled grounds, at the head of Derwentwater and slightly apart from the village, Borrowdale Gates Hotel offers spectacular views of ‘England's most beautiful square mile' from all points of the compass, and from every one of its new or newly refurbished rooms. This country-house hotel is both personal and luxurious, with food in its panoramic restaurant that is not only wonderful but wonderfully immune to fashion, and complemented by a wine-list that's as comprehensive as it is entertaining. The hotel's cosy bar looks out across the valley, as a wood fire burns cheerfully in the lounge

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Borrowdale Gates Hotel?

The Hotel has 32 bedrooms, all of which are en-suite. 10 bedrooms are on the ground floor. All rooms are individually decorated, and all enjoy a different view; The Borrowdale Valley, Cat Bells & Maiden Moor and Grange and Beyond. A good mixture of Singles, Double bedded and Twin bedded rooms result in a varied choice. The Bedrooms are equipped with all that you would expect from a quality hotel – Direct- Dial Telephones, Tea and Coffee making facilities, Hair-dryers, flat screen Television. and bottled water.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Keswick area?

The Lake District is certainly the most inspiring and exciting destination in the UK for outdoor activities. From Rock Climbing to Ghyll Scrambling, Horse riding to Caving, Mountain Biking to Quad biking land based activities are plentiful. Water based sports also thrive, as you would expect in the Lake District. Sailing, Wind surfing, Canoeing, and Kayaking mean that if the rainfall doesn't get you wet, there are a few other ways. The Borrowdale Gates is also fortune to have the Theatre by the Lake with performances on all year round.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Fresh produce is the key to creating superb menus. Dinner menus change daily whilst other menus change seasonally to ensure a good supply of the freshest ingredients. Head Chef Christopher Standhaven and his team concentrate time and effort in ensuring the menus continue to deliver the very best in fine dining whilst still retaining the qualities that makes Cumbria stand out from the rest of the country – the variety and standard of local produce.

Reviews

We were recommended to visit here via a local Lake District Facebook page, it was my mum's 70th and we were staying nearby. We booked her for Sunday dinner, and we arrived in good time so we were shown to the lovely bar area for a drink first whilst our table was prepared. When we went to our table the hotel had sprinkled some birthday confetti onto the table which was a lovely touch (although some of the confetti said 90 not 70!). It's £23.95 per person for a three course meal, half price for children. Between us we had tomato soup, ham hock terrine and seafood risotto as starters...they were all delicious. The Sunday dinners were utterly delicious, we asked for extra gravy which was no issue and the meats were tender. A big dish of vegetables came too with carrots, parsnips, mashed swede, red cabbage and broccoli. We all polished everything off! Then came the desserts with most of us having sticky toffee pudding (I have never had such delicious sticky toffee pudding, it was light and simply perfect), crumble with sorbet and a posh rice pudding - again clean plates all round. The children in our party were so happy as their portions were pretty much as big as our adult ones! The staff here are exceptional, very warm from start to finish...an extra special thanks to Chris who it turns out originates from near where we live! We all left feeling extremely satisfied both with the food, price and overall the service. For a special occasion this is a wonderful place to visit...the location is idyllic and you can see lots of birds on the feeders by the Windows whilst you take in the views. Thank you for making my mum's birthday that little bit extra special and memorable! Stayed February 2017, travelled with family

We have been coming to The Borrowdale Gates Hotel since the last century and have seen it through four different owners. We like to visit at least once a year in the different seasons. The current owners have enlarged the hotel without losing any of its characters and have also added a number of ecological features. However, they have modernised without losing any of the charms and, importantly comfort, for which the hotel had always been known. The staff are welcoming and friendly (and efficient!). Breakfast is hearty and tasty and the evening dinner menu has ample choice of well-prepared and very tasty food. There are excellent views from the hotel in all directions. Rooms are of varying standard (you can specify what you require when you book) but all are comfortable and well appointed. It is the sort of place that you feel relaxed as soon as you enter and it is a pleasure to sit and drink the complimentary welcoming coffee whilst watching the wide variety of birds to be seen from the picture windows (siskins and yellowhammers being our favourites). The situation gives easy access ti a number of walks to suit all abilities and it is within easy reach of the lovely market town of Keswick. It is not cheap to stay here but it is value for money. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

I don't usually write two reviews for the same place, but this is such a super, comfortable hotel. The staff are so helpful, attentive, polite and well trained in their roles. The room we had was a superior one, it was very spacious, comfortable and had marvelous views. The food is excellent and breakfast is a real treat watching the birds eating theirs through the windows. I informed the chef before our visit that I was vegan, I do know how chefs feel about us. However, he created the most delicious and beautiful looking four-course meal especially for me, I was very impressed, as was my husband with his meal too. Excellent visit. This hotel has a wonderful setting, peaceful and beautiful. The staff are exceptional and seem to know many of the guests who are frequent returners. Our room was spotlessly clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated, as were all the public areas we used. I particularly liked the local walks and trips on the lake, which you can access without needing to get back in your car, making this a very relaxing break destination.

We have walked past this hotel on several occasions and then decided to stay, we are so pleased we did. The hotel was great. The staff were quietly efficient, the room was spacious and comfortable with wonderful views. The evening meal was excellent and extremely well presented. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel for piece, tranquility and good food and all in a fantastic setting.
