A beautiful Normal motte and bailey castle which stands proudly over the River Eden surrounded by 27 acres of breath-taking parkland, Appleby Castle offers a wealth of history to its visitors as well as beautifully presented luxurious stately accommodation. It cherishes one of the few intact Norman Keeps in the UK.

The property sleeps up to 48 across 17 bedrooms which span the castle itself and cottages within the grounds. The 12 bedrooms situated in the castle offer a range of layouts, family rooms, twins, doubles and super-kings; four of the bedrooms boast intricately wood-carved, stunning four poster beds and five of the rooms have en-suites. Three comfortable cottages make up the rest of the overnight accommodation available – each of which also have bathrooms and self-contained kitchen areas.

For keen golfers, Appleby Golf Course is over 100 years old with superb greens, often referred to as the Sunningdale of the North of England. Other activities include fishing, horse riding falconry displays and much more, or for the more adventurous quad biking, paint-balling, gill scrambling or hot air ballooning.

Dine by candle light in the 15th century dining room redecorated with oak panelling in the late 17th century. The chef has over thirty years experience cooking at various locations throughout the world. The food is exquisite and the selection of wines superb with something for everyones pallet. For many, the highlight of this memorable castle is the elegant dining experience in unsurpassed ambient surrounds with fantastic food on offer. Private dining rooms are available. Enjoy a luxurious 5 course meal in a 17th century oak panelled room with a bottle of champagne. Appleby Castle is located at the top of the town and guest can walk into town for other restaurants and pubs.

Other Information

Appleby Castle owns the fishing rights on both side of the river just 200 yards beneath the ford. Guided tours are conducted daily of this historic setting.
