Overview

The Lingholm Estate is situated on the Western Shore of Derwentwater in a dramatic location surrounded by incredible views of some of the best loved Lakeland fells. If you are looking for a tranquil lakeside location with nature at your fingertips, stunning scenery and Lakeside access then Lingholm is the perfect place for you. This small traditional country estate lies at the heart of the Northern Lake District with the Lakeland Fells of Skiddaw to the north, Castlerigg and High Seat to the east and the Newlands Round to the south and west. Central to the estate is a grand grade II listed Victorian house, built in 1873 by the prominent Victorian Architect Alfred Waterhouse. Beautiful paths lead you through the gardens straight to Derwentwater and the estate's large stretch of private lake frontage. A short stroll down the drive takes you to a footpath leading to Catbells, one of the most famous lakeland walks and in the other direction to the boat launch to Keswick. The idyllic yet convenient location means you can enjoy a truly relaxing holiday without having to use your car. Lingholm has a strong connection with Beatrix Potter who spent many holidays on the Estate and credited the Lingholm Kitchen Garden as her original inspiration for Mr McGregor's Garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit, she also wrote Squirrel Nutkin at Lingholm. Lingholm was built in the 1870s by Alfred Waterhouse, one of the Victorian era's most renowned and prolific architects who famously built the Natural History Museum in London and Manchester Town Hall. The house was commissioned by Colonel J F Greenall of the Greenall brewing family and as the family's weekend retreat, it was then purchased by the first Lord Rochdale in the 1880s and remained in the ownership of the family until September 2013. “If the vegetable garden and wicket gate were anywhere it was at Lingholm near Keswick…” Beatrix Potter referring to Mr McGregor's Garden 1942.

Reviews

A lovely time was had by all in this wonderful house in such a beautiful setting. You would be happy to spend all day just watching the lambs and the birds outside! Managed to do two walks, Great Crag and Crummock Water in the rain and the sun. Finished off for a drink in the George – Keswick. We hope to return here again.
