Overview

Experience an unique opportunity to stay in one of the most famous historical houses in the world: the home of one of the most famous celebrities of the Nineteenth Century, Sir Walter Scott.

Abbotsford's Hope Scott Wing is perfectly situated in the beautiful Scottish Borders on the banks of the river Tweed.  Sleeping up to 16 guests, the Hope Scott Wing offers luxury group accommodation for families, friends or collegues wishing to escape to the countryside in style.

What makes a stay at Abbotsford Hope Scott Wing unique?

The Hope Scott Wing is a later extension to Sir Walter Scott’s A-listed 'Conundrum' Castle, built in the 1850s to provide generations of his descendants with a secluded retreat.  It has been sensitively renovated to offer guests a unqiue experience in a world famous house.  Furnished with paintings and furniture from the Scott family collection, it retains the warm and welcoming feel of a family home.  The Hope Scott Wing is a special place to stay, perfect for bringing together family and friends to celebrate, relax and unwind.

The public rooms include a lavishly decorated sitting room, a quiet reading room, a billiards room, a fully equipped bespoke kitchen and a formal dining room featuring wonderful views over the River Tweed, provide ample space for you to relax and unwind.

Guests also enjoy the privacy of the Wing’s private courtyard and patio garden, as well as exclusive after-hours access to Abbotsford’s Regency Walled Gardens. There are numerous romantic riverside and woodland walks around the estate to be explored and your party will receive free admission to the historic house where you can admire Sir Walter Scott’s magnificent Library.

A range of unique experiences and catering packages can be arranged, such as dining in Scott’s original dining room, guided fishing days, clay pigeon shooting, private Gin tasting, exclusive guided tours of Scott's historic rooms and even a personal chef.

Up to 3 dogs are welcome in the basement level of the accommodation.

What is the capacity for Abbotsford Hope Scott Wing?

The Hope Scott Wing can comfortably sleep 14-16 guests. There are seven luxury double bedrooms that can be made up as twins or double rooms, with the exception of the master bedroom which has a four-poster canopy bed. There is an additional eighth queen-size bedroom perfect for a family suite or close friends.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Melrose area?

Melrose is a lovely market town, home to Melrose Abbey and an assortment of boutique shops. For those wishing to explore the countryside, there are a plethora of walking routes starting in Melrose, including hiking over the renowned three summits of the Eildon Hills to completing sections of the famous Borders Abbey Way and St Cuthbert's Way.

There is also a wide selection of outdoor activities to choose from in the area including fishing on the famous banks of the River Tweed, golf, clay shooting and alpaca trekking through the Cheviot Hills.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

There is a variety of good quality eateries within the vicinity of the Hope Scott Wing and surrounding towns. There is also an on-site cafe, Ochiltree's, for light lunches, hot drinks and cakes.

A variety of catering packages can be arranged offering a range of options from prepared meals on arrival night, to sharing platters to fine dining.  For a really special experience guests can dine in Sir Walter's Scott grand Dining Room which during Scott’s lifetime was one of Scotland’s most celebrated tables, entertaining the likes of William Wordsworth and Washington Irving.

I booked this venue for my wife's 50th birthday celebration and it was magical in every regard. The staff are just so lovely and helpful. The facilities second to none and the location breathtaking. I would recommend this to anyone and intend to return one day.
