Battle

The town of Battle gets its name from the famous Battle of Hastings back in 1066. The town grew around the Abbey of St Martin. There are also some notable Georgian buildings and the Norman parish church of St Mary. A display of the local history can be found in the Battle Museum of Local History.

The white weather board exterior gives the impression of a quaint country pub but the interior reveals something far more sophisticated. The panelled walls are painted in a classy blue-grey and the contemporary chairs are upholstered in brightly striped or in complimentary plain fabrics. The focus of the food is firmly in the modern British camp with an emphasis on good local produce. The menu changes constantly with the season.

That's She! The Only She! Make an honest woman of her - quick!' was how Rudyard Kipling described Bateman's when he first saw it. Surrounded by the Sussex Weald, this Jacobean house provided a much-needed sanctuary for this world-famous writer. The rooms remain much as he left them, including the study where he wrote many of his major works.
