Reviews

Stopped here unexpectedly on the way home from my dad's birthday outing, from the outside very quaint and inviting, inside ( mind your head and step) a very old characteristic English pub ( might of been a old coaching inn )with a lovely atmosphere to match. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Luckily we arrived at the start of the evening and was quiet . The specials and the menu looked good, we had bread of the table which was hydration bread and homemade butter. The smoked trout was delicious and light-if you like smoked salmon you will like Trout as they are very similar. The grilled plaice was very light, only thing with this is that it comes fully boned and took me forever to get the bones from my mouth which took the enjoyment from eating it but overall it was delicious, my dad loved the tomato soup and my parents loved the pork special . Sadly we couldn't do the desserts justice. A thoroughly enjoyable evening in a lovely setting and definitely will return if/when we are in the area. very close to Highclere castle ( location of Downton Abbey) . It is also a hotel and more parking round the back.

We visited The Yew Tree inn whilst passing, on the off chance we popped in to see if there were any tables available, amazingly we were offered the table by the window which was perfect, and the experience was unbelievable and the food was to die for! We ordered sirloin steak which came out perfectly cooked we also asked for onion rings which aren't actually on the menu but nothing was too much trouble and the onion rings were freshly prepared for us! The steak was divine and we also gave compliments to the chef as this was probably the best steak we have ever eaten! (We also heard the chef receiving a round of applause in the kitchen which was lovely) for dessert I had sticky toffee pudding which was incredible and my partner had the chocolate torte which he also said was delicious! Overall for somewhere we were passing on the off chance it was an amazing experience and would recommend a visit to anyone in the area! Thank you to everyone at the Yew Tree for a very enjoyable afternoon

I went for lunch with my mum and sister, we had come quite a distance from the New Forest so were hoping the meal would be good and we weren't disappointed, we all went for the lamb shank which was served off the bone on a pea puree and was nice and tender. The only thing we didn't realise was that vegetables and potatoes have to be ordered separately and the waitress didn't point this out when we ordered so we ended up ordering vegetables after receiving our main course! However the vegetables arrived very quickly so it wasn't a problem. The portions were fairly small which suited us but if you are very hungry you might want a starter first. If I had to be critical of this delightful restaurant, I would say the service was a little slow, the food came quickly but we had to go to the bar to order our sweets as the waitress was running the bar as well, it was fairly quiet though so I am sure there are more staff at busy times. But overall a superb meal.

We regularly go to the yew tree and have been going for the last year or so. The new manger is so friendly and welcoming and has always made us feel so welcome, last night we went for a meal and had the lemon sole, it was fantastic the new chefs have really done, magical things with the menu, loads of new dishes and we especially like the locally sourced venison in fact we would like more venison dishes to choose from, from the moment we walked in to when we left the atmosphere was amazing loads of people laughing and enjoying them selves the staff where polite and friendly and service was prompt, it's a completely different pub from what it was 6 months ago and I'm looking forward to our next meal there as we are working our way through all the new dishes, thank you for another lovely meal, yew tree we will definitely be back next week.

Arrived there 28th feb, we had booked a table of four, seated promptly and attended to promptly and politely, excellent choices of seasonal and local menu, specials, were fishcakes, which two of our party ordered and were very pleased, the whitebait was also excellent, the black pudding scotch egg was perfectly cooked, the steak, venison and kidney pie is on my list of favourite dishes I have eaten out, thank you,my wife enjoyed the belly pork dish and said it was cooked to perfection, the lemon posset was quite possibly the best pudding I have had, perfect blend of sweetness, creamyness and sharpness with the lime sorbet, shortbread was a nice touch also, wife had the chocolate cheesecake, thoroughly enjoyed, all in all excellent, thank you, the setting was warm and cosy

My friends and I have been here a few times and it's been amazing every time. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Both the managers, Melissa and Tom, always have a smile on their faces and are incredible at their jobs. The food is extremely high quality and the chefs definitely know what they're doing. All round a lovely pub to go to, either for a drink or a beautiful meal. Thank you to all!

We found the restaurant when staying in Newbury and looking at the Michelin guide for somewhere to go! It is very easy to get to from Newbury, and attractive to look at. Plenty of parking space. We were served quickly and efficiently, the food was excellent, well cooked and presented. A very good choice available, and we extended our meal to an unplanned dessert, it was worth it! We would go again.

My friend and I enjoyed a super lunch before going on to the magnificent Highclere Castle. The pub is cosy and we were given a very nice table in the window. The service was friendly and efficient and the food excellent. In fact I think the fish and chips were the best I have ever eaten. I wish it was my local pub as it is a lovely place to visit.
