Overview

This restaurant and pub with rooms on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall is under the same ownership as the acclaimed Felin Fach Griffin in Wales. Bare wood tables and chairs against flagstone floors of the bar area give way to the bright blue and terracotta painted restaurant. A short, regularly changing menu is a blend of European influences and British seafood cookery. Start with a plate of Cornish mackerel, spiced carrot slaw & lime mayonnaise or Crispy pig's head, ribbed pumpkin puree, capers, ear crackling. Main courses might include a White rabbit stew, herb risotto, carrots, prune & rabbit faggot or there's Turbot, red wine, soubise spinach, oyster rissole, chive & ginger. A fixed mark up on the wine list makes for affordable drinking.

Where is The Gurnard's Head located?

Take the M5 to Exeter and the A30 for Okehampton. Continue on the A30 all the way to Penzance. Once at the Tesco roundabout branch left, and then fairly immediately right under the A30 flyover to Gulval.

After a half mile, take the (straight) left to Newmill and take the next right (also Newmill). Follow this road for 4 miles over the moor until you come to a T junction. The Gurnard's Head is immediately and unmissably ahead of you.

What cuisine is on offer at The Gurnard's Head?

The Gurnard’s Head is an inn that returns you momentarily to the slower pace of life that so many of us yearn for.  Time spent in this part of the world will unwind you as you enjoy one of the country’s most dramatic coastlines, one that has inspired artists and walkers for centuries.

The salty air is proven to make you sleep deeply in the most comfortable Vi-Spring beds. You will eat simple, earthy and delicious food. Beers, wine and sherries.

What is the signature dish at The Gurnard's Head?

Mussels, ginger, chilli, lemongrass, coriander, coconut broth

Scampi monkfish, vindaloo dip, lime, coriander

Pork belly, fennel kimchi, BBQ sauce, peanut & sesame seed

Gurnard, tomato, anchovy, olive, samphire, pinenut, courgette

What makes a meal at The Gurnard's Head unique?

Home to so many interesting and dedicated people who grow and nurture plants and animals, West Cornwall is a wonderful place in which to run a kitchen.  And, like so many things, food is best kept simple. The Gurnard's have built the reputation of their kitchen on this maxim.  A short, fresh and seasonal menu changes every day according to what is brought to the back door or what the chefs feel is at its seasonal best.  In Winter you might get Fish Soup with Rouille or in summer, a Ceviche of Sea Bass alongside leaf salads foraged by Fat Hen.
