The Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant

12 Ashton Lane, Glasgow, Glasgow City, G12 8SJ

There’s lime and vanilla mash, potato fondant and roast garlic crushed potatoes but not a chip in sight at this ironically named Glasgow stalwart. Eat upstairs, downstairs or in between on the mezannine level, but grab if you can a table in the gorgeous courtyard. A plethora of fine Scottish ingredients are used imaginatively in dishes such as Dumfriesshire rabbit, pear and pistachio nut sausage with basil cabbage or Perthshire wood pigeon wrapped in bacon served with a rich game sauce and pearl barley. Traditional accompaniments include clapshot (mashed swede and potato) and stovies; a kind of Scottish take on pomme boulangere. For the terminally thirsty, there’s a 'big pub', 'wee pub' and 'corner bar' all on site.

We had four nights in Glasgow and ate at top restaurants each night. This was our favorite in Glasgow and one of our best food experiences in Scotland during our two week driving tour that included some of the Highlands best restaurants. After all the warnings about Haggis, I decided this was the place to have it and I truly enjoyed it as part of my appetizer. My main course was an excellent Cod and my wife's first was Crab and main was Guinea Fowl. The preparations were all excellent. We don't know how they do it but their butter is phenomenal and turns their bread into a mini-gormet meal. Caledonian Ice Cream for desert was heavenly. Nice wine list too. The ambience is lovely and casual, and the service very professional. All in all a wonderful restaurant.

The Ubiquitous Chip is a go-to dining solution. Their menu is incredible: authentic and mainly local Scottish cuisine, but surprisingly creative and varied. They offer "wee" dishes and large dishes, as well as mains and STUNNING desserts. Excellent array of local and international beers and other drinks. The decor is stunning, with a coy little entrance that gives nothing away until you're actually inside. Good value for money as well. Definitely going back.

Great grub! Seriously, some really fine food here. Good wine list. Highly recommend the rabbit leg confit foie gras rillette starter, a generous slice of foie gras mousse studded with rabbit, and for mains the red deer, and outstanding stovies; baked goats cheesecake was sublime. Not so impressed by the guinea fowl. The atmosphere is casual, but the food is up in Michelin * territory. My partner has food allergies, which I called about in advance, and they printed a special copy of the menu for her, listing just the dishes she could order, which we really appreciated.

Nestled in a cobbled lane on the West End of Glasgow is a marvellous restaurant that definitely shows off Scottish cuisine. We had a wonderful meal in a delightful setting - the highlight of our trip to Glasgow. The red deer was amazing! True to their backstory there was not a chip to be found...

I love this place for very special occasions like my birthday. Our family hold special birthdays and graduations here as everyone is always happy with the excellent service and wonderful Scottish fare. I have never had a meal at The Chip that I didn't thoroughly enjoy and I nearly always have a steak.

I booked this back in January and the communication with the restaurant was first class, from confirming time and number in my party to the emailing of menus and wine list.
This was a special night as my daughter had graduated that day and the restaurant did not disappoint. We had champagne on arrival expertly poured by our wine waiter Fraser and then went on to have a wonderful meal from the set menu explained beautifully by our waiter Peter. After our meal we went into the we chip bar for after dinner drinks and a great night was had by all.

Main restaurant at Ubiquitous Chip never disappoints. Scottish themed ingredients, gorgeous building and restaurant in the main "courtyard" area. Really nice bars. Staff always friendly. Having eaten here > 20 times never had less than a fantastic meal, fantastic, friendly service and a good evening. Nice location up Ashton lane, near to University, usually nice buzz of activity in the lane and surrounding bars. Cheaper menu offered on mezzanine and bars. also really good quality food. Nice wee smoking terrace on top floor, with heaters, with a view, for those who puff.

We love this restaurant and always go for a special occasion. A little on the pricier side but well worth the money. Service is always good and the food has always been fantastic

We gathered to celebrate a birthday with a gorgeous meal. The extended family and friends picked from the Brasserie Menu, and the various dishes were very well prepared and presented. each of us round the large table was delighted with the quality of the food and the skills in the kitchen were very obvious. One guest made a mistake in the rib-eye steak, and ordered it rare, in a fit of optimism. The waiter corrected the customer error with a smile, and in a minute or two the dish was taken and replaced with a fresh steak, perfectly prepared to her taste. This was the manner of the service- the customer is to be happy. I enjoyed my sea bass with samphire immensely, while my brother (the birthday boy) was impressed with the chicken and polenta.
The sweet menu was a delight too, and the wines and beers were excellent.
We were happy, loud and indulged with patience and lots of attention in the side room upstairs. The patience was extended to our bill-splitting, and the staff kindly itemised the prices with apparent ease. The cost of dining in the Ubiquitous Chip is not over-the-top, and represents great value for dishes so expertly prepared and presented.
We tipped well, and thought the whole evening was fantastic.

If you are looking for good staff great food then I would recommend this place. It's not cheap but I enjoyed my meal. Staff are attentive and pretty switched on which is hard to find. Nice atmosphere and booked as even during the week it's busy.
