Dating to 1796, this incredible Georgian mansion was built by James Murray, and descendants of his continued to live there until 1933, when Cally Palace was sold to the Forestry Commission. It has been a hotel since 1934. Cally Palace sits in more than 150 acres of Fleet Forest.

It's said that James Murray's decision to build Cally Palace as a summer residence led in large part to the development of Gatehouse of Fleet. Following Cally's development, industry flourished in the town, especially the cotton mills. The town's name comes from its proximity to the Water of Fleet, and its historical role as the ‘Gait House' for the stagecoaches travelling between Dumfries and Stranraer, with many travellers choosing the safety of this stop, rather than risking night time journeys, due to the highwaymen operating in the area.
