Overview

The Rose & Crown in Barnard Castle, Durham, is a characterful 18th-century coaching inn set on the village green, overlooking the old stocks and water pump, right beside the Saxon church locals fondly call the Cathedral of the Dale. Each of the bedrooms has its own charm—some with beams and antique pieces, others more contemporary in the courtyard, and a couple offering the bonus of a private sitting room. Inside, you’ll find a welcoming bar with an open fire, spindle-back chairs and just the right amount of warmth for an afternoon pint or pre-dinner drink. The award-winning food can be enjoyed in the bar or the oak-panelled dining room, and there are cosy sitting rooms throughout the hotel for reading, relaxing or simply switching off.
