The Compasses Inn
Lower Chicksgrove, Tisbury, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP3 6NB
The charming Compasses Inn is a 14th century thatched building that oozes character, and welcoming staff are on hand to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The four delightful bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated, each with flat screeen TVs and hospitality trays. The award-winning ever-changing menu offers seasonal food using locally sourced produce where possible. The Compasses Inn is sited in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and within one hour's drive of the New Forest, Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge and the delightful beaches of the south coast including Lulworth Cove and Studland Bay.
The Compasses Inn is part of the following Inspirations:
"Down a narrow winding lane between Sutton Mandeville and Lower Chicksgrove lies a small whitewashed pub with a thatched roof and log fires. It’s almost too picture postcard perfect. In fact the only drawback with the Compasses Inn is the narrow lane itself, which is an absolute nightmare if you meet anything coming the other way.
This ancient inn has just four bedrooms over the bar plus rooms in a separate cottage. The attic bedrooms are accessed by some old stone steps on the outside of the pub. All four rooms lie off a communal area that has rush matting and plenty of seating, making it a good place for taking boots off or assembling for a walk. The bedrooms themselves are small, modern and white, offering everything you could possibly want but no baths – only showers – so no tub for the weary walker to soak in.
Downstairs the charming, low dark bar offers three local ales including “The Large One” from Butcombe Brewery. Guests and locals sit in a series of high-backed black-painted settles with minimal cushioning. Sunday lunch, served under the eye of chef Paddy Davy, is extremely popular with locals. This is a traditional English pub, open fire at one end, agricultural instruments on walls and Scrabble nights during the week."

Excellent welcome and all round service. Wonderful food and superb breakfast. Accommodation first class. Only issue bar and food prices are on the high side, otherwise cannot be faulted.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We actually had a choice of rooms when we arrived and chose room 2. It is a large well furnished room with en-suite. The staff were extremely apologetic as the main bathroom light wasn't working and they offered to move us. However the remaining light was perfectly adequate so we stayed. The food and service was excellent from all staff and the pub has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Special mention to Amy, whether serving us dinner in the evening or breakfast the next morning was always bright, cheerful and nothing was too much trouble. A great place to stay and we will definitely return.

Really nice staff, the girl who showed us to our room was really welcoming and friendly. The room was very clean and had all that we wanted for a nights stay whilst attending a wedding. The breakfast was lovely too!

We were very pleased with the accommodation and the service and will come again when we visit Wiltshire.

A very enjoyable stay. The only complaint was the outdated shower. A hand held one is not really very good and you could not get the taps to mix. We suggest complete new fittings are required.

Compass Inn I stayed for a long weekend at Compass Inn. I an wheat free diet and I emailed ahead to inform them. They replied they would get me some wheat free bread in. This turned out to be typical if the people at the Compass, they go that extra mile to make you feel comfortable. I often go away for weekends and always take my dog, Milo, this has to be one of the most dog friendly places we have stayed at to date. That is always a good sign to me. The room I had was lovely, very spacious, exceedingly clean ( even by my OCD standards) and comfortable. It rained on the Saturday so could not go out for long but this dod not bother us as our room was a delightful place to spend a weekend afternoon in. The food at the Compass is absolutely delicious, I tried a variety of things from the menu and was not disappointed in the slightest. Very well presented and very tasty indeed. All in all I can honestly say that I will definitely return to the Compass and highly recommend it.

Found the ideal country pub in a restful and beautiful setting. We enjoyed the company of a friendly landlord and an excellent evening meal in front of a warming log fire; the beer was good too! Breakfast was first class - looking forward to our next visit!

Lovely old inn in a very quiet and pretty location. Good parking. Very friendly staff. Good food. Accommodation could benefit from some improvement - didn't match up to the really quaint old pub/restaurant.

Great food and hospitality but just wish B&B's would realise that bed frames are a pain in the backside if you are plus 6ft. Enjoyed the stay are would stop again.

We spent 1 night in this delightful inn. The countryside around is beautiful and we very much enjoyed our visit, including the evening meal and breakfast. Our daughter has just moved to the area & we shall certainly stay here again.
