Overview

The 18th century Red Lion hotel at Clovelly lies astride the 14th century harbour wall. Each of its 11 bedrooms enjoys either a spectacular sea or harbour view. The Sail Loft is a conversion of an old store adjacent to the Red Lion and all its six deluxe bedrooms have wonderful sea views. The effect is a perfect maritime experience.

What makes a stay at Red Lion Hotel unique?

Because of its age, no two bedrooms at The Red Lion are the same and all are decorated in a nautical theme. Falling asleep to the sounds of the sea is a unique and delightful experience. Peaceful though it is, there is a real warmth and a sociable atmosphere about The Red Lion, where you can also mingle with the locals in the Snug Bar. Dogs are welcome in two rooms. There is also so much to do and see at Clovelly.

What style cuisine is on offer at Red Lion Hotel?

With fresh fish landed right outside the door, vegetables and produce from Clovelly Court Gardens, grown to organic principles, and game from Clovelly Estate, the head chef has the finest local ingredients from which to create his seasonal dishes. He has an inventive and refined cuisine, having spent many years abroad honing his skills, mainly in France. His food philosophy is to keep it local and fresh. The menu includes seasonal French and British dishes.

What is the signature dish at Red Lion Hotel?

Clovelly caught whole lobster, simply served with a saffron and garlic aïoli, lemon, rocket and boiled new potatoes.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Red Lion Hotel?

The Red Lion has 11 ensuite rooms, of which one is a twin room and two are family rooms. The Sail Loft has 6 stylish ensuite rooms, two of which are family rooms, and one has disabled facilities. All rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated in a nautical theme. There is a Harbour Restaurant, Harbour Bar and Snug Bar.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Bideford area?

When staying at Clovelly, view the film show of the history of the village, watch skilled craftspeople in the workshops creating silk and pottery, visit the Charles Kingsley and Fisherman's Cottage museums, and Clovelly Court Gardens at the top of the village, and see the famous donkeys and harbour. Take a boat trip along the coast or a fishing trip, or book a trip to Lundy. One of the best ways to appreciate the stunning setting of Clovelly is to stroll along Hobby Drive, and the coastal path in the opposite direction to Mouthmill also gives breathtaking views.

Homely Country Inn with picturesque views I visited Clovelly in Autumn 2017 and the hotel is a focal point located right on the harbour, with comfortable, tastefully decorated rooms, great views and great food. The views are some of the loveliest you'll see in Devon. The village itself appears to have stood the test of time, as it was, hundreds of years ago. The room cost wasn't excessive, under £100, and that included a substantial breakfast. So with the sound of waves lapping against the shore, the day and the evening spent there was truly magical. I ate seafood in the restaurant which I was told had been caught locally that morning. I drank the beer. It wasn't overpriced. The staff were all helpful. I had gone there with friends but I could see that the hotel was very family oriented. I would go again.

Great hotel in fantastic setting We've just spent a couple of days at the Red Lion in Clovelly and had a great time. We stayed in a room in the Sail Loft which has been newly refurbished to a high standard, very spacious with views straight out into the sea. The staff were really helpful from booking through to our arrival and service throughout our stay was great. We ate in the restaurant on our first night and food was really wonderful, a relatively small menu well done, the pheasant and steak that we ordered were fab. The Bar meal next night of fish and chips was really tasty too. The village itself is very special, beautiful and quirky and the locals were really welcoming. We had a relaxing stay and will definitely be visiting again.

Easter break” 5* Stayed in the wonderful Red Lion hotel over the Easter bank holiday weekend. As always the staff were wonderful and the room spotless. Changed from our usual room over looking the harbour to one in the sail lofts which was excellent. As it was our anniversary we decided a meal in the newly refurbished restaurant would finish the weekend off nicely. A table overlooking the harbour and village in the corner gave a great atmosphere. The menu is not huge but a great mix of tastes makes up for this easily. We both had the duo of pork which was stunning. Genuinely wonderful. A great wine selection and as always awesome Red Lion staff topped the night off. Visited April 2017

4* We arrived early and to our delight our room was ready for us. The lady on reception was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very cosy and overlooked the sea, the beds were very comfy ,room very clean, we had bottled water, tea coffee and hot chocolate if we wanted it. The first night our dinner was included which was very nice eating in the hotel restaurant. The breakfast was very good indeed, you could choose anything from the menu I had Eggs Benedict the first morning and it was cooked to perfection, my husband had a mixture of warm pastries which he also enjoyed. Over all this hotel is well worth a visit. Kath P., Dorset

5* Grockles winter break. This is a lovely hotel set right on the harbour. Guests are allowed to use the harbour car park and also have free access to the village. We stayed in The Sail Loft which has been converted into bedrooms. The rooms are large, beautifully furnished and with modern bathrooms. We dined in the hotel restaurant and found the food to be delicious, well presented and cooked. The hotel bar, which is also frequented by locals, was cosy and friendly. All staff members were helpful and efficient. We would love to stay here again

We only stayed one night on our tour of Cornwall & Devon, this is a lovely hotel, perfectly positioned, right on the harbour wall, rooms are a good size, with views of the sea, the restaurant is nice but the food, wow, the most delicious cod I've ever had, scallops were divine and the desert ( can't remember what it was called because the wine was so nice too) all served with a smile by the lovely Victoria and Beth, both a credit to the hotel, I highly recommend the Red Lion

Had a lovely stay at the Red Lion. My parents live locally and I'd always wanted to stay there. We stayed in Room 18, the newly converted sail loft, which is amazing. Bright, airy, spacious and modern with lovely views. Try and stay there if you can. We had one dinner in the bar which was quite good and two very good breakfasts. All in all a great couple days with unbeatable views and very friendly staff. Room Tip: Room 18 or 19 in the Sail Loft are the ones to go for.

Loved this hotel, we had a balcony, beautiful views, I was woken up at about 2.45 am. A fisherman was pulling his big cool box across the pebbles to his fishing boat I presume ready to go out to fish.... it was brilliant like going back in time. The Red Lion is a lovely pub and hotel is very friendly and serves fabulous food and the location is certainly an added bonus..!! Would definitely recommend it

“Why the Red Lion” 5* Well its at the bottom of a big hill in a great location with scenic views while you eat and drink. They have some lovely local brews to sample, the food was very good indeed and although a little on the expensive side I would eat there again.. There is seating inside and out
