Overview

Visit Hillbrush began its life in 2017, having been a dream of their Chairman, Philip Coward, to have the first brush making museum in the UK for many years. With the company move to Norwood park at the end of 2016, the dream became a reality and building work commenced. As the space grew, it transformed from a rough shell to a beautifully furnished museum, shop and restaurant with the help of family and staff members.

They are the perfect venue for families looking for activities in Wiltshire, or travellers looking for a comfortable, friendly stop. They offer electric car charging, loyalty cards and gift vouchers.

Dogs are more than welcome on their beautiful south-facing terrace.

There is also a unique museum covering everything from injection moulding methods to the company history, and even an encounter with The Queen and their delightful shop selling Royal Warrant holder products, local gifts and produce, and even their own products, manufactured here on site, also Royal Warrant approved.

Where is Visit Hillbrush - Museum located?

Visit Hillbrush is the perfect venue for families looking for activities in Wiltshire, or travellers looking for a comfortable, friendly stop. Visit Hillbrush is just a two minute drive from the A303 Mere and Stourhead exit and the ideal spot to refresh and refuel when visiting the area or travelling along the A303.

What is the history of Visit Hillbrush - Museum to the present day?

The Hillbrush Company was established by brothers Fred and Bill Coward in 1922. Hillbrush originally specialised in dairy and agricultural brushes, but within a few years many of the streets were being swept with brushes made by Hillbrush. Whilst the company's use of synthetic fibre has increased in recent years, this has mainly been in the manufacture of specialist brushes, such as those used in food production or catering establishments and in hygiene-sensitive areas, such as hospitals. As a long-standing presence in brush manufacturing, Hillbrush decided that their history was simply too rich not to share with the public.

What is there to see and do at Visit Hillbrush - Museum?

The Visit Hillbrush interactive museum is the first of its kind in the country, hosting a wide range of fascinating information about brush-making, the company's history and the local area. It offers colourful and tactile displays, a Kid's Corner to keep your little ones busy, 3D exhibits to entertain and inform, videos, and vintage brush-making machinery.

Other Information

Visit Hillbrush offer free admission, free parking with disabled and electric car charging bays, and free high-speed WiFi. They are family friendly, with a Kid's Corner that includes child-sized brooms and activity booklets. They also have a beautiful south-facing terrace with parasols so you can sit outside with your family, and even bring your dogs to enjoy the sun and make the most of their loyalty card scheme.

In the area for business I intentionally arrived early so I could grab some breakfast. Hillbrush is only 30 seconds off the A303 so if you're looking for some quality food as an alternative the services then this would be a good option. Decent choice of breakfast options including vegetarian or lighter options. I had a vegetarian breakfast which was cooked to perfection as well as being nicely presented. Perfectly poached eggs, spinach and potato rosti made it for me! Service was prompt and professional and we didn't have to wait very long for our food to be produced. I felt the pricing was reasonable considering the quality of the food presented. We didn't sample anything from the lunch menu. A large dining room with different seating options including outdoor seating with blankets available - very continental! Plenty of off-road parking and free charging points for plug-in electric vehicles. Can't wait to come back when next in the area.

We were aware of Hillbrush, but had never stopped. Just off the A303 in Mere, it is an excellent place to stop for a break. The restaurant is very modern, clean & with good staff on hand to help. The selection of food & drinks is very good. The toilet/bathroom facilities were ultra modern & spotlessly clean. Well worth a very short diversion off the A303.

Visiting the site as I have a meeting at the company tomorrow. A very interesting museum covers the history of the company and displays some of the original machines. We had cake and a milkshake in a very busy restaurant - both delicious! The toilets were very clean. Finally we browsed the lovely shop before heading home to Shrewton. Well worth a visit!

A lovely surprise, the place did not sound amazing due to it being a visitor centre, however i had a great vegetarian GF roast which they altered for me without fuss. Great shop for buying your brushes and added bonus free electric hook up for the car.

Very comfortable place, friendly staff, and excellent food. Best place for dining around the area. There is a shop selling very high quality cleaning accessories and novelty items, also the Museum at the back of the restaurant is very interesting.

Arrival information & directions

Address: Norwood Park, Mere, Wiltshire, MereBA12 6FE, United Kingdom

From the East From London/Basingstoke/M3, head west on A303. Do not take the first Mere exit you see; it will take you through the village. Continue on the A303 for about 1.5 miles around the Mere bypass and take the second Mere exit, signposted to Frome B3092/Gillingham B3095. Turn left at the bottom of the slip road towards Gillingham and Mere. Hillbrush will be on the left about ¾ mile down the road. From the West Head east on A303 and take the exit towards Frome/Gillingham/Mere/Zeals/B3092 and turn immediately right to continue to follow Signs for Gillingham/Mere. Turn right onto B3092 and Hillbrush will be on the left about 1 mile down the road.
