Overview

Mill Green Mill & Museum: See our lovingly restored watermill grind organic locally grown wheat. A hidden gem in the hamlet of Mill Green between Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City. There's been a mill on this site for over a thousand years so our millers follow a proud tradition. We're also the social history museum for the borough, with three exhibition galleries in the old millers cottage showing a changing programme of art and themed historical exhibitions. we make sure that there's plenty to keep children happy and occupied while you browse. A full programme of events, activities and workshops, and a beautiful riverside setting with pergola, herb and knot garden make this a lovely place to visit. Home made Cream Teas on summer Sundays - what's not to like?

Visited here today with a friend and four children aged 2,3,4 & 8. Most importantly the children enjoyed their visit, though we struggled to stretch the visit to two hours and that was including lunch. There is enough parking spaces for 5 cars including one disabled space, though there are other spaces on the road adjacent to the mill, outside the actual grounds. It costs £3.50 per adult, children are free, though an additional charge of £3 is applicable per child if you want to join in with the creative activities. We were able to watch the entire process of flour making and the children were able to grind some too, using two historical methods (I won't spoil the surprise!) There is a room with various activities such as puzzles, old fashioned toys and dressing up hats for children to enjoy. Another has various artefacts (and replicas) from various time periods dating back through history, as well as a 'lift the flap' wall display, giving you information about various animals and the purposes they served in ancient times. Despite it being the summer holidays, there weren't many other people there, which was nice as it enabled us to make the most of everything, without being crowded. There's a nice little garden area with benches and tables if you want to take your own lunch, or you can buy some whilst you're there.

Mill Green Museum and Mill is slightly hidden away, but well sign-posted (actually next to A1(M)). There is limited car parking on site, but plenty on the street outside. The museum and mill cost £3.50 to visit (children free), but you can visit the grounds and café without paying. The museum is quite small. In the first room we tried on hats and took silly photos. In the second room story boards take you through life in different ages – in this room there was also some colouring sheets and pens available for children (and the remains of some playdoh). Third room contained an old dwelling hut. We liked the railway related items and the sample station platform! The fourth room / area is the mill itself on two levels, plus a viewing bridge over the stream. Milling was happening and someone, in costume, was making corn dollies. Outside are many artefacts of interest plus a small garden area. On a sunny day the outside is very picturesque. We finished our visit with a cream tea in the gardens. On a sunny day this is an excellent attraction. If the weather is not so kind then you may be a bit disappointed as the museum by itself is not very large.

Wow, an actual working water mill.with resulting product to buy. Went to visit early in season, made me quite nostalgic, I am not exactly ancient, but living my first years with family that included grandparents I can remember several of the items and machines on display being in everyday use. The mill was working and proved fascinating to watch, actually kept grandchildren quiet watching and listening to explanation being clearly and knowledgeably given. The season was too early for one of their famous cream teas but the grandkids enjoyed using the dough made with the flour to make Hot Cross Buns. Especially when they claimed them to eat, after they had been baked. There was also a "trail" to find all the hidden pictures which they enjoyed. While we sat enjoying a cup of tea and the view. Brought a loaf of their fresh baked bread home, delicious.

Lovely place Always looking for interesting and educational places to take our 9 year old granddaughter during the summer holidays. This place is delightful and explains to the kids (and adults) how the Mill works and how the grain for bread goes through the process. The museum is expertly arranged and the working Water Mill is fascinating and explained so well by the Miller. The Mill dates back hundreds of years. Also they had string platting for the kids which was a great plus. The Admission charge was: Children FREE, Adults £3.50, Entry to the pretty grounds FREE and Entry for one adult accompanying a child attending a paid activity (£3.00 or more) FREE. Excellent value.

“A Working Water Mill” Reviewed 9 October 2016 A little tucked away but so close to major routes this museum is excellent. Best to visit when the water driven mill is in action and flour is actually being milled. The adjacent museum is fairly compact but crammed with local material. We last visited on a special event day with historic cars being displayed and it was, to say the least, packed! Easy to spend a couple of hours here. Car parking capacity not normally a problem but be prepared if you visit on a special event day. Visited September 2016

Tripadvisor Heritage at its best Great to go and be able to see a well restored water mill with my nearly 9 year old, & be able to see it working as kids are SO used to todays technology & todays "gadgets" for her to see a traditional method of a water mill & have it explained how it works is great. All mill staff were friendly & helpful & it was great to look round the gardens and there is a tearoom there as well

Found this on here so decided to have a mooch about. Was pleasantly surprised how interesting it was and as the saying goes ‘you learn something new every day' very friendly and helpful staff. The miller was so nice and informative and clearly works very hard to keep it all going. He let my teenage boy wind the wheel to start the water mill going. He enjoyed himself.

Working water mill All staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Suitable for disabled; other than top half of mill. Miller very informative and interesting; you can buy their flour in shop. Only disappointment was no café, but are currently in process of planning, so will not be long!

We had a lovely afternoon here. Friendly staff with lots to see and you can buy flour to take home to bake your own bread.
