Gainsborough´s House

Interesting insight to one of Britain's most famous artists. Sudbury is a typically East Anglian town with lots of history. I visited Gainsborough's House, which is easily accessible from the town's free car park (3 hours free parking). Beautiful small garden and somewhat surprised at seeing original works of art by Gainsborough and other very famous artists, due to an exhibition being held at the House.

Leave the shops. Close to the shopping centre of town and not therefore immediately tempting, it is really worth leaving the pavement and entering this ancient building. It brings some life to the painter and to the town and the statue in the square. Not all the paintings are attractive but the display does educate the visitor about an important part of English history and art.

Behind a busy road is peace and quiet as you enter Gainsborough's House – a must to visit while in Sudbury, we were staying at the Mill Hotel so an easy walk to it from there. You enter via a side entrance and immediately walk into peace and tranquillity. The House is very interesting in itself with all the paintings, etc, and history regarding Gainsborough.

A hidden gem. The House has a lovely collection of Gainsborough's work, some of his contemporaries and had a fabulous exhibition of etchings on the ground floor. They have even managed to install a lift so that people with restricted mobility can access the upper floor. The house is well preserved and the staff are very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.

An excellent year two school trip. I was a parent helper on a school trip to Gainsborough's House and wasn't sure that this would be that interesting for 6/7-year-olds, however, I was proved very wrong. The lovely staff at the House made this a fantastic trip, with lots of short activities keeping the children's interest at all times.

Thomas Gainsborough's birthplace in the heart of Sudbury. Beautiful paintings and drawings, and also temporary exhibitions. The garden is cared for by a team of volunteers, and its central feature is the huge mulberry tree, planted in 1610, and still producing fruit. The shop is a treasure-trove of beautiful things to buy!

To visit Gainsborough's House in Sudbury is a wonderful experience. It is almost like being in the house with the artist. Some Americans we took there were so enthralled that they are determined to acquire one of his works. The gardens are perfect, so English. The curator has done masterful job.

Art lover's paradise. Quite small but plenty of paintings old and new, the house is old but has a lift to all but the top floors.
