There's something very satisfying about visiting one of the many small museums in the UK, where you can get to grips with the message and feel you've learnt something about the area rather than being bamboozled by hundreds of exhibits. Charnwood Museum is one such spot.
Where is Charnwood Museum located?
Charnwood Museum is situated in the beautiful Victorian surroundings of Queen's Park in Loughborough.
What is there to see and do at Charnwood Museum?
The famous Ladybird books originate from Loughborough so there's an exhibit and memorabilia on that subject plus information about the world's oldest multi-cellular fossil Charna discovered by a local schoolboy. Other super exhibits include the grandiose Beaumanor Chair carved from a local oak tree for a wealthy Leicestershire family in the 1600s, the pre-reformation Wymeswold Chalice, an Anglo-Saxon gold sword pummel, the Barrow Kipper (a Jurassic marine reptile that still ‘swims' under the floor of the museum) and the Auster aeroplane that flies around the rafters. The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions on local themes as well as national and global topics. Look out for family fun days and workshops held through the year.
