Lewes Castle & Barbican House Museum

If you've never visited the pretty town of Lewes, which sits within the glorious South Downs just a few miles from bustling Brighton and the coast, a trip to Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum is a great way to familiarize yourself with this historic part of Sussex. Lewes Castle's construction began soon after the conquest of 1066 (at the behest of William The Conqueror's brother-in-law) and stands apart from other castles of its era thanks to its two mottes (only Lincoln shares this trait). Climb to the top of this Norman edifice for wonderful panoramic views across Sussex and then head down past the impressive barbican gate to the Museum of Sussex Archeaology which tells the story of Lewes and its castle from prehistoric to medieval times. There's also a cute little mini cinema, allowing visitors to visualize Lewes life in bygone days. You're right in the middle of town here too, with plenty of coffee shops and cafes to slake your thirst after your visit. October 2017 sees the launch of great new resources for those struggling to climb to the Castle Keep: a sound installation, a listening bench, wonderful audio guide app, large print guides and braille to augment and improve visitor experience for all.
