The Top Ten Links Courses in England and Wales

by Roderick Easdale

Links courses are the aristocrats of the game. The Open Championship is always played over one. These coastline stretches of sandy turf unfit for farming are where the game started. Links humps, bumps, hollows and fast-running turf require thought to play well. They offer umpteen ways to play the same hole, a world away from modern target golf - and the same layout can play very differently on successive days simply from a change in the wind’s force. There are very few links courses in the world - purists will tell you fewer than 250, so Britain is particularly blessed by having so many of them.
