TEN PLACES TO STAY NEAR COUNTRY SHOWS

Grab your wellies, we're off to a country show. Britain is fit to burst with rural celebrations throughout spring and summer, offering lungfuls of fresh air and an insight into country traditions. And these days they offer more than the chance for the nation's agricultural community to get together to admire their prize bulls and reveal the art of sheering sheep. Today, folk from both town and country can also thrill at daredevil skydivers and stunt quadbikers, get behind the wheel of a steam engine or loop the loop on a Ferris wheel, all served up with food and drink grown and produced in the area. A great day out for all the family.
Ilkley Moor Cottages and Apartments

On the edge of Ilkley Moor sits a cluster of luxury cottages and apartments with a historic house at its heart. It's a charming stopover for the Great Yorkshire Show, 9-11 July, in Harrogate, an agricultural event that keeps up with the times, laying on fashion shows and cookery demonstrations alongside the usual parade of fine farm animals.

The Pheasant Inn

This quaint inn in the Peckforton Hills offers a spectacular panorama of the Cheshire plain to enjoy with a pint. The Pheasant's comfortable rooms are particularly popular with ramblers, but you could make one your bolthole on a trip to Wallace and Gromit's favourite country event, The Nantwich Show, 31 July, home of the International Cheese Awards.

Higher Wiscombe

There's plenty of room for everyone at these three lovely self-catering cottages, sleeping six to 20, with a pool, games room and playground to keep everyone entertained. You'll be within easy reach, too, of the Devon County Show 16-18 May, at Clyst St Mary, where a fun-filled itinerary promises a great day out for all.
