Did you know, animals are good for you. It's a fact that our furry and feathered friends can encourage instant relaxation, for adults and children alike. So why not make them part of your holiday? There are plenty of places around the UK where you can enjoy encountering animals, from award-winning zoos to wildlife sanctuaries and sporting events. Or choose to stay somewhere with its own resident winged and four-legged menagerie - a great way to introduce little ones to the animal kingdom. So follow your instinct and take a break that brings you closer to nature.

Families, who make their base at this four-bedroom barn conversion in the Yorkshire Wolds, will be within easy reach of Flamingoland Theme Park and Zoo (www.flamingoland.co.uk). Named for the community of flamingos who were among the first residents, today the zoo is home to 129 other species and offers close encounters with penguins, lemurs and meerkats, and participates in an ongoing flamingo conservation project.
