Great places to stay along the South West Coast Path

by Julie Vuong

Great places to stay along the South West Coast Path

Leaping over boulders, ducking under low-growing trees and splashing through muddy paths; the 5.3 mile ‘assault course’ (as I have dubbed it) from Mousehole to Lamorna Cove on the Cornish coast demands a bit of grit and determination, not to mention a pair of good boots. This is one stretch of the well tread and much loved South West Coast Path; covering 630 miles across four counties, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, it’s celebrated for taking in some of Britain’s best sea views, wildlife, heritage and landscapes. This spring it turns 40, and to mark the milestone, walkers – from the occasional stroller to the daredevil hiker – are being encouraged to take part in a sponsored walk. Choose from 56 legs that cover the entire length of the path, culminating in a birthday party at Land’s End on 7 May 2013. Proceeds raised will preserve the path for years to come – find out more at www.GreatSouthWestWalk.co.uk. And for a place to rest your worn feet, here are some top refuges along the way.

This country pile on the Portloe to Place leg of the path is a godsend for weary ramblers. Think rooms filled with inviting beds and comfy armchairs; dressers lined with decorative china, elegant rugs and patterned wallpaper. It’s got that home from home feel – with a touch of flair too. Slip into the stunning hot tub outside and take in the views overlooking Gerrans Bay on the Roseland Peninsula and feel those aches and pains disappear, or head to the spa, where a well-moisturised hand will ease any muscle tension in suitably serene surroundings.
