With a deep afternoon winter chill in the air, arriving at the Treglos near Padstow to find a pot of piping hot Earl Grey and an array of buttery scones, a fluffy bowl of clotted cream and some locally-made strawberry jam awaiting me in the lounge was a pleasing sign of things to come. Matters improved further once, suitably stuffed, I wandered up the pleasingly creaky old wooden staircase to discover my billet – two smart, modern interconnecting rooms (the kids were in tow), one with glorious views over Constantine Bay. Following an hour or two’s lolling about admiring the view, brushing up in the modern, pretty bathroom and inspecting the Glo Spa (great little pool and Jacuzzi), I returned to the lounge to find it buzzing with guests chatting, drinking G&Ts and inspecting the menu – a really lovely atmosphere. Three hours, three courses, a brandy and a game of post-prandial scrabble later, I was fit to flop. And so I did, in crisp, freshly ironed cotton sheets with the distant sound of the waves lapping and plans to explore Padstow mingling as I slept.

Treglos Hotel is part of the following Inspirations:

The best family escapes in the West Country by Dinah Hatch

"The Treglos sits hidden down a country lane near Padstow, with views over the stunning Constantine Bay. Try to arrive late afternoon when tea and scones daubed in west country cream and fresh strawberry jam are served in the lounge area and you can sit and over-indulge while you watch the waves pound the bay. The Treglos sells itself as family-friendly and the games room, indoor swimming pool and fabulous safe setting for letting the kids off the leash back this up. Staff are friendly to a man, the restaurant has a relaxed, happy vibe (with board games in the lounge by the fire after dinner setting the tone) and the rooms are spotless. Pass the jam, please…"

Cornwall vs Scotland for the perfect family holiday by Dinah Hatch

"Raining? Play scrabble by the fire munching scones slathered in cream and jam, go diving for spoons in the spa’s indoor swimming pool or chill out in the games room. Sunny? Head off down the sandy little lane five minutes to breathtakingly pretty Constantine Bay near Padstow (you can see it from your room) where tinies spend hours in the sand and older ones try the brilliant surfing. Or simply install yourself in the Treglos’ lovely sunny sunken gardens which include a play area and plenty of comfy outside chairs. After a busy day chasing around with the children, get them fed and upstairs to bed – the hotel has a really good baby listening system with phones that you can keep with you to hear your children at all times. Complete peace of mind while you enjoy the excellent menu at the Quies restaurant, overlooking the gardens and bay beyond."

Ten of the Best British Beach-side Hotels by Dinah Hatch

"Overlooking one of Cornwall’s most popular beaches (and a surfer’s paradise to boot) Constantine Bay, the Treglos Hotel near Padstow is a beach bunny must. After a hearty breakfast served by lovely staff and a quiet read of the paper with coffee next to the roaring fire in the lounge, pull on your walking boots and wander five minutes down a quiet country lane to the sea. When I visited, on a cold, bright, sunny morning, there were dog walkers, surfers and runners galore admiring the light and the seahorse breakers lashing the shore. Afterwards, head back for lunch, a swim in the heated pool and a dip in the Jacuzzi."

We have been going to Treglos for the past 15 years or more. It is very comfortable, friendly, has superb food and is in one of the best locations in Cornwall. We take our dog to. I thoroughly recommend this hotel to any who loves Cornwall.

Hotel, management and staff are excellent. Food is wonderful, excellent chefs. Afternoon tea is the best we have ever experienced. Everyone is made to feel special from the time you walk through the door. Service is first class. We have been every year for 7 years and it is always the same. All the staff are very happy there, from the management down. Nothing is too much trouble.

The Treglos is a step back in time yet still in the 21st century. Our stay was far too brief, but we enjoyed every minute. Our room had the most beautiful view of Constantine Bay, it was just lovely. Everything was simply excellent in every aspect. We never got a chance to have the dinner, but our first night we did have bar food and it was quite good. The included breakfast is first rate. The beach is perhaps a half mile walk. The hotel is well located and a wonderful place to launch expeditions in the north Cornwall area. Or just stay and enjoy the lounges, sunroom, deck, pool or spa. Can't beat Treglos and its marvelous history!

My wife and I know the area well, but we have not stayed at Treglos for many years. We were delighted to find that the bedrooms and guest areas had been completely renovated. Our bedroom with balcony and sea view was really excellent, and the staff were very helpful throughout our stay - even enabling us to extend our holiday. We had booked for B&B - and the breakfast selection and timing was ideal for us. We had dinner a few times, but the menu was not really to our taste, On a B&B basis, Treglos deserves 5 stars, but I would probably drop that to 4 stars if we had booked on a Dinner basis too. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we booked for 2017 before we left.

I stayed here in North Cornwall for three days relaxation after a busy holiday with my family. I stayed alone as my family were in a cottage nearby.

I did not have a sea view, but my single room was a good size with a very comfortable bed and bathroom. Compliments to the staff who clean the rooms, everything was always sparkling clean on my return from breakfast.

Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of fruit, cereals etc and a tasty cooked breakfast. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient.

I had dinner in the restaurant one evening, and also ate in the lounge bar another evening. The food was very good.

As a solo traveller I felt more comfortable eating less formally from the lounge menu. However the hotel does feel safe for a single woman guest.

Some earlier reviews mention dress code. I understand the hotel no longer requires jacket and tie for dinner, it has now adopted a "smart casual" policy. This sensible move may now attract younger guests, I did notice a few young couples and families among the older clientele.

I appreciated the lift as I have some mobility issues and was allocated a room near to this which really helped.

The receptionist was very helpful ordering me a taxi to collect me at 9.30 pm from a family event.

The staff were all very well trained and polite.

The hotel is old fashioned, but in a good way. It has lots of character. I appreciated the various places to sit and relax, including sun loungers on the lawn. There is a sea view from the garden and lounge.

The hotel does have wifi and I was always able to find a signal.

The hotel is well located very near to Padstow and there are lots of beautiful beaches nearby including Constantine bay which is half a mile away.

Overall, I enjoyed a relaxing stay and would return to the Treglos on future visits to Cornwall.

we returned again this summer, with our grandchildren, to our favourite hotel, where, as always, we were looked after wonderfully. This time our son and daughter in law joined us for four of the days, and they loved it too! Wendy, Jon and the staff added many little touches which we all appreciated. Many thanks to you all, and see you very soon!

My husband and I stayed at the Treglos recently and we enjoyed our stay thoroughly. We were very impressed by the wonderful food, the warmth and the friendliness of the staff. Our room was extremely comfortable with a fantastic panoramic view of Constantine Bay. It was our first time at this hotel and we have already booked to come back again next year. I would definitely recommend it to my friends! Thank you for a wonderful stay.
