Overview

Temple Sowerby House Hotel is situated in the Eden Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty between the English Lake District and the Pennines - a truly splendid spot to make your home for a few relaxing days. With just twelve individually styled bedrooms, this hotel is large enough to be professionally run, yet small enough to offer a friendly personal welcome. It's a charming house with no two rooms the same. Each bedroom has its own appeal and features, from cosy beamed rooms to high Georgian ceilings. The rooms are various in size, but all offer the same comforts. Temple Sowerby House is one of the few hotels and restaurants in Cumbria to have been awarded Two AA Rosettes for the quality, imagination and consistency of the food - so expect it to be good.

Reviews

Handily located within ten miles of the M6 we broke our journey from Scotland to the South of England at this old favourite. Our elderly Labrador was accommodated with a small surcharge, and we spent a very comfortable night in the old coach house with serves as the hotel's annex. While the dog was welcome in the room, she was, of course, prohibited access to the public areas of the hotel which we understand completely. There are plenty of country paths in the immediate vicinity to exercise your dog. Our room was spotlessly clean, comfortably appointed and tastefully decorated. The bed was oh so comfortable. Dinner was superb, with an interesting and varied menu making the most of locally sourced produce, complemented by a thoughtfully compiled wine list. Our food was excellently cooked and beautifully presented; service was spot-on. Can't wait to find an excuse to travel through the Eden Valley once more to stay here again!

This is the sort of place where you forget what is going on in the world, and just relax! We had a lovely front room overlooking the village that was very quiet at night. An additional highlight was the room's spa bath. Apart from general relaxation, the highlight of this place is the food. Without getting into deep discussion about the variety of flavours on our plates, we had an absolutely delicious meal. We selected a nice bottle of Argentina Guarda from an interesting wine list, and that proved a sound choice. Full marks to the hotel also for keeping some good bottles of local real ale. Thanks to Paul and Julie, and to our excellent dinner waitress. The TSHH is not cheap, but you wouldn't expect it to be. We thought it was good value and a great place to stay.

I stayed at this hotel for three weeks in August with my wife and 14 year-old daughter on our summer holiday. It was perfect in all respects. The owners, Paul and Julie, made us all feel extremely welcome, as did the rest of the staff who were friendly, polite and helpful at all times. The hotel was spotless and our rooms were comfortable and spacious. The food in the restaurant was absolutely outstanding and the chef, Daniel, and his assistant, Alex, should be very proud of themselves. If we choose to come back to the Lake District next year, then this will be the first hotel that I will call to check on availability.

We have just spent three nights at TSH and don't think we've ever eaten better anywhere. Service was excellent and the manager and waiting staff friendly and helpful. Its a lovely old hotel tastefully decorated to a high standard.

The gourmet food is Michelin quality, and for incredible prices. The rooms are immaculate, with the best mattress I have found anywhere! Only downside for me is that I was only staying there one night!

Stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The food is exceptional, the rooms are excellent, the host and all staff attentive and very helpful - a truly delightful establishment!

A very warm welcome and comfortable restaurant. Breakfast choices included traditional regional options like kippers. I'd definitely recommend a visit Thank you for your hospitality.
