The genuine 14th century Langley Castle is set in a 12-acre woodland estate with brush-mown lawns, restored to a magnificent and comfortable hotel. All guest rooms are luxuriously appointed, some Feature rooms in the main Castle have a sauna, spa baths and window seats set into 7ft walls. The food served in the Rosette awarded Josephine restaurant is of the highest order, making the most of fresh, local produce, with fish and game a speciality. Langley is perfect for discovering the delights of Hadrian´s Wall and other local attractions. The magical setting of Langley is also ideal for wedding celebrations, events and conferences, and can also be hired exclusively if you wish to have an entire castle to yourselves.

Top 10 Hotels for Romantics by Dinah Hatch

"A 14th Century fortified castle in the Northumbrian valley of the South Tyne, Langley Castle is ideal for squirrelling away for the night with your partner. Why? Well apart from the ridiculously romantic rooms (nine in the castle itself, a further 18 in the grounds), a sublime setting (when it snows it looks like a movie set) and the fabulous interiors which see you wandering through arched stone doorways past suits of armour, the castle is close to Kielder Forest. This is one of the remotest places in the UK, with stunning walks. On the north shore of Kielder Water, snuggle into a Janus chair, the art installations that accommodate two and can turn to face any direction. At night, take a blanket and lie on the ground to stargaze – this is a designated International Dark Sky Park and one of the starriest places in Europe!"

"You’ll find a lot of hotels with names including “Castle” in Britain but none that looks quite so much like the castles of our medieval imagination as Langley. Langley Castle was built in the fourteenth century as a “tower house”, a defensive fort that could also be lived in. The builder was Sir Thomas de Lucy who lived in dangerous times. This four-storey block was ferociously attacked by the forces of Henry IV when he was fighting the Dukes of Northumberland (see Henry IV Part I). After that siege it remained a ruin until it was bought and restored by the nineteenth-century historian, Cadwallader Bates. During World War II it was requisitioned as a barracks and then used as a girls’ school before being converted into a luxury hotel within a ten-acre woodland estate. Some of the feature rooms in the main Castle have spa baths and window seats set into the seven-foot deep walls and four-poster beds are de rigeur, some with quasi-medieval canopies."

10 sweeping escapes for Downton devotees by Julie Vuong

"There's a rich line of gentry that have called 14th century Langley Castle in Northumberland their home over the past 600 years, most famous being the two Viscounts Langley who were executed at the Tower of London in the 18th century. Nowadays it's more renowned for its hospitality - many of the 27 bedrooms feature window seats hewn from the 7ft thick castle walls, grand four-poster beds and luxury spa baths. Pick one of the five feature rooms and indulge in your very own privy chamber full of chandeliers, high ceilings and luxury fabrics."

Ten Hotels to Pop the Question by Liz Coggins

"Create your own fairy tale by proposing within the walls of a14th century castle. Restored to its original grandeur, Langley Castle stands majestically in 12 acres of woodland. Book into one of the feature rooms with high chandeliered ceilings, exposed stonework, incredible lavish décor and discreetly hidden spa bath and sauna. Then pop the question on a, unique medieval window seat set into the wall with stunning views before a candlelit dinner in the award winning restaurant."

The Top Ten Historic Hotels on the Scottish Border by Adrian Mourby

"Langley Castle was attacked in 1405 by Henry IV when he was fighting the rebellious Northumbrian Percy family, an incident that Shakespeare dramatised. Left a ruin, the castle was restored in the nineteenth century by a local antiquarian. During World War II it was used as a barracks but since becoming a hotel has won North East Tourism's award for ´Best Small Hotel’."

"This 14th-century castle provides the splendid setting for Christmas in the Northumberland countryside. And the team of innovative chefs at its 2 AA Rosette restaurant can be depended upon to rustle up a delicious Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.
