Ettington Park hotel

If I say this is the sort of place that popstars playing nearby stay at (it is), it might give you an idea of what Ettington Park near Stratford Upon Avon is like. A Neo-Gothic Mansion surrounded by 40 acres of parkland and with outside dining terraces that make you feel like an extra in Downton Abbey, the hotel is seriously luxurious. Its 37 rooms and 11 suites are all styled immaculately and the public areas coo elegant comfort. The architecture (vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows) alone is worth the visit. But there’s lots more to look forward to besides - afternoon tea is an event not to be missed (with divine finger sandwiches) and the dinners served in the Oak Room dining room are exquisite. This one’s great for kids too, with plenty of clipped maze-like hedges for them to tear around. A real treat.

Our pick of the best UK literary festivals by Dinah Hatch

"The grown-up one: The Stratford Literary Festival, Stratford Upon Avon, April 24 –May1. Now in its ninth year, Stratford really packs a punch with the literary heavyweights but the festival is just as known for its eclectic performer choices. For instance, this year sees Brooklyn rapper Devon Glover AKA The Sonnet Man attempt to recite all of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets non-stop in hip hop speak (dontchaknow) while elsewhere on site actor Martin Jarvis and his wife Rosalind Ayres join composer Richard Sisson to celebrate the life of Beatrix Potter. Presenter Chris Packham will launch his memoirs, debut author and Costa First Novel winner Andrew Michael Hurley will talk about his novel The Loney and Joanna Cannon will debate her bestseller The Trouble With Goats and Sheep. You’ll also hear from former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis who will discuss her novel The Butcher’s Hook. Book your accommodation early as Stratford always fills quickly. Treat yourself with a stay at the utterly luxurious neo-Gothic Ettington Park, five miles from the centre. With 40 acres of parkland, vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and divine dinners in the Oak Room, it tops off a perfect literary day."

Ten great hotels near the best summer festivals this year by Adrian Mourby

"Stratford Upon Avon is world-famous for its Royal Shakespeare Company but it also supports a wonderful autumn music festival (10-24 October). The festivals motto is “Early Music to the Present Day performed by Music Legends to Names of the Future”. This year guest artists include BBC Young Musician of the Year Laura van der Heijden, Eboracum Baroque, and the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra. The lunchtime concerts held in Stratford upon Avon Town Hall offer a complementary glass of sherry and there are good free “Buy-A-Beer” music events in many of Stratford pubs. Ettingham Park stands six miles outside of Stratford and has been the family home of the Shirley family for centuries. Not only is it famous for its ghosts, but has its own Shakespeare connection. One of the tenants of Ettingham, the Underhill family, sold the Great House in New Place to a certain William Shakespeare when he returned to Stratford with his earnings from The Globe."

Hotels for the half term to please the whole family by Dinah Hatch

"Stratford Upon Avon can be ludicrously busy at the best of times but the smart money stays just outside for a piece of Warwickshire country tranquillity. Ettington Park sits just a few miles from the Bard’s home town surrounded by 40 acres of parkland with the River Stour running through it. Honey coloured stones, stunning brickwork and ornate arches set the tone here and inside the grandeur continues with elegant chandeliers, antique furniture and lovely wall art. I love the perfect blending of heritage architecture with 21st century facilities here, and the indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms and Jacuzzi are perfect places to relax after the madness of Stratford. There’s a great butterfly farm at Swans Nest for the kids too."

Top Ten Historic Hotels in the Midlands by Adrian Mourby

"The Shirley family have been lords of the manor since the Domesday Book and Ettington Park was their neo-Gothic home in the 19th-century. Before being turned into a hotel, Ettington featured in the 1963 horror movie The Haunting. Its variegated stonework, ogee windows, panelled library and tall roofline make it a perfect – if slightly sinister - example of Victorian domestic architecture."
