Hotel du Vin is well known for its sympathetic creating of hotels in old, characterful buildings and the HdV in Edinburgh is no exception.

A former asylum bang in the middle of Edinburgh’s old town, this hotel is all atmospheric exposed brick walls, candlelight and Victorian steel girders and the effect is unique and appealing.

Rooms (the quietest ones overlook the courtyard) are slick, chic and bang up to date but still cosy (with discreet touches of tartan to remind you where you are), with hand sprung mattresses, Egyptian linen and gorgeous drench showers.

Downstairs guests always express delight at the little whisky snug, a perfect retreat from the madness of Edinburgh and the best place to round off a meal in the highly popular bistro.

10 Great Hotels for Romance this February by Adrian Mourby

"Valentine’s Day in a lunatic asylum? It may sound a strange idea but Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin, tucked away in Bristo Place is a surprisingly cozy nook to hide away for the night. Back in the heady days of the second Jacobite Rebellion, 500 deranged adults and 180 children were crammed into this space where there are now just two dozen rooms and a great glass wine-tasting suite floating above the dining room. Things have changed a lot since 1745 here at the Boho end of Edinburgh. Hotel du Vin is right next door to Bedlam Theatre and very close to Elephant House, the cafe where J.K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book.

You'll find a touch of Grand Guignol in the huge mural of local bodysnatchers Burke and Hare in the private dining room named after them. And the odd ghost too but the people on reception are very kind. If you get lost -or frightened- on the way back to your room they will gladly escort you.

This is a Valentine’s hotel for those who need more than fluffy pillows and chocolates on the pillow. You’ll get those of course - but a touch of frisson too."

THE TEN BEST HOTEL CONVERSIONS IN BRITAIN by Adrian Mourby

"This distinctive hotel in Bristo Place occupies part of the old Edinburgh Bedlam Mental Institute, constructed in 1743. In its sad heyday it housed almost 500 adults and 180 children in less-than-luxurious conditions. Next door stood the New North Free Church, which has also been recently converted and is now the Bedlam Theatre run by the prolific Edinburgh University Theatre Company. The theme of Bedlam continues inside the hotel. From the outside it looks like part of a row of old terraced housing but down a long stone passageway you’ll come to two distinctive dining rooms: Bedlam (which retains its original eighteenth-century domed ceiling) and Burke & Hare, which celebrates two notorious Edinburgh grave robbers in one of Hotel du Vin’s disinctive trompe d’oeil murals. The hotel has 47 bedrooms with the quieter suites spread around the courtyard. All the usual stylistic hallmarks of Hotel du Vin are here: leather armchairs, freestanding baths, huge beds with high-thread-count linen, exposed brickwork and moody lighting. There’s even the occasional mezzanine and discreet touches of tartan to remind us that we are in Scotland."

10 Best Whisky Experiences in Edinburgh by Adrian Mourby

"While England has been going through its “Ginaissance”, Scotland has seen its national drink –unfashionable as late as the 1980s - reach stratospheric levels of desirability around the world. Wealthy people want to own bottles that retail in four figure sums. Wealthy companies want to own whole distilleries.

Edinburgh doesn’t have any distilleries within the city, but it is full of people who want to experience Scots whisky. Walk down the Royal Mile and you are assailed by shops selling whisky, tartan and cashmere. There is a subtle preponderance of certain retail companies who give their outlets different names but sell all the same whiskies at all the same prices.

So how to get an authentic experience of whisky while visiting in the Scottish capital? Here are ten places worth visiting where you are guaranteed to learn and enjoy – and not get ripped off in the process."
