Overview

Nestled in the Kentish countryside, this English country cottage and Barn Theatre is a simple oasis that once belonged to renowned Victorian actress Ellen Terry, exuding her artistic spirit and its bygone history of the sea.

Where is Smallhythe Place located?

Smallhythe Place is situated in the village of Smallhythe, just two miles south of Tenterden, in Kent, and 20 minutes from Rye.

What is the history of Smallhythe Place to the present day?

Once the home of famous actress, Ellen Terry, historic Smallhythe Place is full of charm. Surrounded by roses in the summer months, it offered Terry a sanctuary from her busy London life, and it is now a museum of her life, with many displays showing artefacts and personal items, including jewellery, letters and of course, many of her theatrical costumes.

What is there to see and do at Smallhythe Place?

The Barn Theatre was converted in 1928 by Ellen Terry's daughter, Edy Craig, from a thatched barn dating back to the 17th century. To this day, it is still used for theatre productions, with many award-winning actors performing here. Exhibitions and talks also take place throughout the year. The gardens surrounding Smallhythe Place are delightful, with the splendid rose garden, an orchard and nuttery and ponds to discover. There is a Tea-room at the theatre, which offers food throughout the day, and refreshments for evening performances. There is also a small gift selection for sale, including books, jams and plants.
