Discover 'the Downton of the north' at Gawthorpe Hall Gawthorpe Hall was built in the early 17th century for Sir Richard Shuttleworth although the family owned the estate for 200 years before. Much of the original plasterwork remains and the long gallery is hung with early 17th century portraits. Many of the paintings are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery.
