Overview

Lancashire's Leighton Hall is the family home of the famous Gillow furniture makers. Fascinating and enjoyable tours of the house are available, and there are glorious gardens and parkland to explore, as well as woodland walks. Afternoon teas are available, and there's a regular displays of birds of prey.

Where is Leighton Hall located?

Nestled in a bowl of parkland with a backdrop of  the Lakeland fells, Leighton Hall is just a 10 minute drive from junction 35 of the M6, and is easily accessed from both Carnforth and Lancaster.

What is the history of Leighton Hall to the present day?

Leighton Hall's recorded history goes back to 1246, with the first owner being an Adam D'Avranches. Leighton Hall has been in the hands of a further 26 owners since that date. With just one exception, every owner has been a Roman Catholic, and the history of the place is bound up with that fact. In Penal times, there was always a priest in hiding in the house, and in the 17th century, the owner, Albert Hodgson was actually jailed for his Catholicism, and Leighton Hall was put to the torch. The house was subsequently rebuilt by George Towneley, and the parkland was laid out and the woods replanted, with much evidence of this work still visible today. Richard Gillow, grandson of the founder of the Gillow furniture company, bought the house in 1822. Today, Leighton Hall is the family home of Suzie Gillow Reynolds and her family.

What is there to see and do at Leighton Hall?

All rooms open to the public are still in use by the Gillow family, and tours of the house are both fascinating and entertaining, and very informal.  There are no roped off areas and visitors are encouraged to sit on the furniture and really get involved. There are also magnificent gardens and grounds to explore, as well as birds of prey displays (Weather permitting, summer season only). There is a gift shop and tea room. In August children are invited to participate in a free teddy bear treasure hunt.

Other Information

Leighton Hall offers the chance to explore a wonderful historic house and a fascinating family, with delightful gardens and grounds to discover too.

he Hall, still a private residence with connections to the Gillows family from Waring and Gillows, furniture makers, is open to the public 2-5pm most afternoons. We did a guided tour of the house led by a very knowledgeable volunteer, Anne. She explained the history of the house and the objects within very well. Unfortunately photos were not allowed but as this is also a private residence; sensible. We then visited the grounds and walled garden before visiting the tea room (the old kitchen) for tea and a scone. There was a bird of prey flying display included in the price but we opted out. An interesting visit with pleasant, knowledgeable volunteers. Recommended.

Usually when visiting stately home most of the stuff is roped off but not here. We were encouraged to sit, touch and ask questions. Lovely fires in the rooms with very comfortable sofas to relax on. This really is a family home and has a welcoming feel to it. The story of the house and the Gillow family was fascinating. We enjoyed a great cream tea and all ate too much as the food was so good. Would love to return later in the year to see the gardens.

Had an excellent guided tour followed by a bird of prey show on the front lawn. The house and grounds are stunning, the gardens are immaculately kept and the views from the rooms we went in were beautiful. The chap who does the bird show is a real character and excellent at what he does, we really enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely return.

Visited as members of the HHA, it was a rainy day but we were entertained by the falconry display whilst waiting for the tour. We were a small group and the tour guide was really informative. Plenty of interesting features. Pity it was so wet that we could not enjoy what looked from a distance a wonderful garden.

I have never visited a stately home where you are allowed to sit on the chairs, in the dinning room and the lounge. Excellent guide - Pam - lovely family home, stunning views , although it was wet the day we went so we were not able to do the gardens ,but the cream tea made up for it, definitely recommend that.

This was a superb afternoon visit. The guide, Pam, knew her stuff and told us about the house and family with enthusiasm The views from the gardens and house were worth going for themselves. The birds of prey were an added highlight, shown by a caring and knowledgeable man.
