Overview

Discover a magnificent 18th-century English interior in an idyllic country setting The Claydon House's architecture features lavish rococo and chinoiserie decoration, including a special Chinese Room and Grand Staircase parquetry that is so precious that no one is permitted to use. For over 380 years, the house has been inhabited by the Verney family and the family museum includes memorials of Florence Nightingale, who was a frequent visitor, along with military uniforms, arms, costumes and musical instruments. Views of the parkland and the lake are from the tall walls.

What is the history of Claydon to the present day?

Since 1620, Claydon House has been family seat of the Verney estate. Having undergone significant renovations in 1757 and 1771 to match the neighbouring manor house at Stowe, the present house is almost entirely 18th century. Only a portion of the great house still stands today, with its splendid state rooms of the 18th century, and much of the interior woodwork and intricate carvings found in the house is unique to Claydon.
