Overview

Explore the eclectic Medieval Fortress, Chirk Castle The Welsh Castle was built in 1310 and the last of Edward I's reign to be occupied. The National Trust provides a wide variety of exhibits and on-site events. Explore the mediaeval fortress with its dungeon and murder holes, meet Will the archer and learn how to protect the fortress, take part in a pike drill (but don't get in the stocks) or sign up for a guided tour and learn a bit about the glorious colourful past of the castle. There is an ever-changing large schedule of activities throughout the year, so check the website for what's going on and when.

What is there to see and do at Chirk Castle?

The award-winning gardens span 5.5 acres of manicured lawns, trimmed yews, herbaceous borders, stunning flowers, shrubs and rock gardens, and the wooded playground–ideal for a walk. Don't skip the 18th century ha - ha terrace at the bottom of the yard, with breathtaking views of the Cheshire and Salop plains.

Chirk Castle has over 480 acres of parkland for you to enjoy, with wild ponies, goats, veteran trees, and a beautifully preserved portion of Offa's Dyke. The estate is situated within the Outstanding Natural Beauty Area and has also been established a Special Scientific Interest Site as an important habitat for unusual invertebrates, bats, fungi and wild flowers.
