Overview

Berkeley Castle is unique, it has been lived in by the same family for almost 900 years - longer than any other fortress in England. King Edward II was murdered there in 1327. With 8 acres of gardens and grounds and a stunning Tropical Butterfly House, it makes for a perfect day out for all members of the family.

Where is Berkeley Castle located?

Berkeley Castle is conveniently located just off the M5, 10 minutes from junctions 13 and 14. Half way between the cities of Gloucester and Bristol, only half an hour's drive.

What is the history of Berkeley Castle to the present day?

There are many fascinating links to significant historical figures and events at Berkeley Castle. It's well worth taking one of their complimentary guided tours to discover more about the connections with Edward II, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Francis Drake and Doctor Edward Jenner to name but a few. Find out how it became a focus of action during the first phase of the Civil War. In more recent times Berkeley Castle has been used as the backdrop for many significant dramas including - Poldark, Wolf Hall, The Spanish Princess & Johnny English Strikes Again. Today it is still home to the Berkeley family who built the Castle in 1153.

What is there to see and do at Berkeley Castle?

Visitors begin their tour of the Castle at the Keep, the oldest surviving part of the Castle. Enter the King's Gallery, with an impressive collection of royal portraits, a view of Edward II's cell, a vast dungeon and Francis Drake's chest. The Picture Gallery has many fabulous paintings with notable artists such as Stubbs and Knyff being represented. The Billiard Room now set up as a Dining Room has stunning eighteenth century silver and many Berkeley family portraits. A Meat Larder, Buttery and magnificent Medieval Kitchen follow. Called in to Berkeley Castle on our way to a Hotel stop over, what an amazing place, well preserved and beautiful, you really must take the guided tour, so informative, all the stories, they'r amazing. And then, (If you haven't already ) treat yourself to a coffee in The Yurt Cafe, different from the usual and good to experience. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and will be going again when my daughter comes over from Australia.

I visited this wonderful castle on July 17 last. It is simply stunning - my second visit, actually. The guides were helpful, knowledgeable and lots of fun. Nothing was too much trouble. We had tea and cakes sitting outside in the sunshine at the Yurt Cafe. I was so loathe to leave! Simply not to be missed.

What to do on a very wet Sunday? Visit gorgeous Berkeley Castle of course! We had an excellent tour guide ( it lasted just over an hour) and it was well worth it as so much information was given that you couldn't possibly ascertain just looking around yourself. It really made the history come alive.

Wonderful day out. Beautiful setting. Children really enjoyed going round the Castle and the quiz really made them look and listen. Will definitely go again. The grounds are really lovely. Trees to climb, roses and sweet peas and herbs really do perfume the air.

Visted in August summer hoildays arrived about 12 and left at 4.30. Plenty to do, it is such a lovely place to explore they had a few things happening for children including a trail map hunting for dragons which led you through the grounds and castle.

A lovely day out with friends. The filming of The Spanish Princess was taking place so it made it all the more interesting. Bit of a climb for those of us with walking sticks but we coped. All in all, a lovely time.

It is nice to visit a castle that has a lot in it rather than just stone walls. This castle is really interesting and the views are stunning. The grounds are lovely to walk around too.

Would recommend this Castle, our teen daughter loved it! Beautiful and well worth a visit to explore the history of the castle and the well decorated rooms and history information.

Berkeley Castle is an outstanding historical attraction. The staff are courteous and helpful. A visit to St Mary's church is a must for history buffs.
