Overview

A real hidden gem, tucked away in the forest on the Sussex and Hampshire border, Stansted House sits regally within 1800 acres of ancient forest. A wonderful Edwardian house, once the hub of aristocratic society, Stansted is historically fascinating, its grand staterooms left as if the Earl of Bessborough (who made the house home in 1924) was just out of the room for a moment. Downstairs, the servants' quarters are on display, again set out as they would have been back in the house's heyday. Don't miss the stunning Chapel of St Paul too, once an inspiration to Keats. Outside, children will love the yew maze and the Stansted Park Light Railway – if it's nice weather, take a picnic and explore Stansted Park. There's also a craft workshop where pottery takes place which you can follow up with a light lunch in the Pavilion Tea Room. Drop in on the farm shop to pick up a few local delicacies and the garden centre for a little light shopping.
