A Cotswold manor pretty much unaltered for the last 400 years, Chavenage House in Gloucestershire is featuring as Trenwith House in the hugely popular Poldark. Prior to that it was probably best known as Candleford Manor in the series Larkrise to Candleford. It was built in the classic Elizabethan E shape that it is today in 1576 by a wealthy sheep farmer and has been occupied by only two families since that time. These days, it is theLowsley-Williams family that call the manor home. Packed with stunning period furniture and fascinating relics from the Cromwellian era, a tour of the house is simply wonderful and it is generally members of the family who are the tour guides. Look out the windows from the manor and you'll understand why directors chose this property as the setting for the show – there isn't a single modern building or telegraph pole on the landscape to suggest you are in the 21st century. A lovely day out.
