Overview

A classic English country house and garden, Lyme sits in 1400 acres of moorland and deer park with views across Manchester and the Cheshire plain.

Where is Lyme Park, House & Garden located?

Situated in Cheshire, Lyme is nestled on the edge of the Peak District National Park and within easy distance of Stockport and Macclesfield. The villages of High Peak and Disley are nearby.

What is the history of Lyme Park, House & Garden to the present day?

Lyme was home to the Legh family for more than 550 years, and a great sporting estate in it's Regency heyday, when Thomas Legh created the house and garden you see today with the help of Italian architect Giacomi Leoni. Visitors can learn more about Thomas Legh's life as the savior of Lyme's fortunes as well as a famous explorer and archaeologist. In recent times, Lyme has become famous as the setting for Pemberley in the BBC's 'Pride and Prejudice', starring Colin Firth.

What is there to see and do at Lyme Park, House & Garden?

Visitors can discover life in an 18th century Regency house, from period dressing up and billiards to lawn games and strolls through the formal gardens. From 2019 the house hosts a brand new exhibition featuring the Lyme Missal, the most important printed book in the National Trust collection. Outdoors, Lyme's deer park is filled with trails, and features regular guided walks, running events and orienteering routes. The Crow Wood Playscape is available for children to enjoy. Several food and drink outlets are available at Lyme, including the Salting Room and Wyatt Garden for bookable afternoon teas. There is a gift shop, pre-loved book shop and plant centre.
