Overview

Syon House sits within an extensive historical estate in West London. The gardens are renowned for their extensive collection of rare trees and plants. The 100 acres of parkland were created over 20 years by ‘Capability' Brown in the eighteenth century. The centrepiece is the spectacular Great Conservatory built by the 3rd Duke in the 1820s.

Where is Syon Park Gardens located?

Syon Park is located in Brentford, in West London, opposite Kew Gardens. Despite being a mere nine miles from Charing Cross, the park feels as if it were in deep countryside. The park borders the Thames, and has a tidal meadow which floods twice a day.

What style of garden is Syon Park Gardens?

The gardens and arboretum house rare and beautiful plants, the water meadows are home to a host of wildlife, and the Great Conservatory is an architectural gem designed to house the 3rd Duke's extensive botanical collection. Exotic trees and shrubs started to arrive at Syon from North America in the 18th Century, and many of these still flourish today. In one of his first major commissions, ‘Capability' Brown swept away the formal landscape, replacing it with the open views characteristic of the English Landscape movement. Over the course of twenty years he extended this by incorporating farmland into the new park, and creating Pleasure Grounds, both centred on large new ornamental lakes.

What can guests enjoy at Syon Park Gardens?

Within the gardens there are many sights to see. Visitors can walk through the magnificent Great Conservatory, which features a number of exotic plants. The main path around the gardens takes visitors around the tranquil lake which attracts a whole host of wildlife, including the sunbathing turtles. You will also find a large collection of rare trees, predominantly species from Eastern North America. The walk alongside the lake takes the visitor past Flora's Lawn, dominated by a statue of Flora, Goddess of Flowers, atop a 55ft Doric Column. The other attractions at Syon Park include; ‘Snakes and Ladders' for adventurous children, a trout lake for the fly fisherman and the Hilton Hotel.
